I've never been to a movie where spontaneous applause broke out.

I have... In Star Trek 6 when they beat the snot out of that cloaked Klingon ship.

Or did you mean applause by a normal audience... not a bunch of Trek nerds?

Funny thing about Star Trek 6 (or is it Star Trek VI?), anyway my friend and I went to see it and if you'll remember there were all sorts of rumours out there that Capt. Kirk was going to bite the big one in this movie. Well he didn't of course and as we were walking out of the theater we saw this huge line of Trekkers (or is it Trekkies) waiting to go in. Evidently they all decided that the 7 o'clock showing was the appointed time.

Anyway as we walked up to the line I said in a nice loud voice "I can't believe they really killed Capt. Kirk!" My friend immeidately picked up on it and the two of us discussed the details his shocking "death" all the way down the line. As we were assaulted by angry voices telling us to shut up and don't ruin the ending, I was trying very hard to keep from laughing out loud.

    Simple things amuse simple minds.

Good movie. I would see it again. It is a good date movie too, btw.

do horses actually know they've won a race?

I think that pride is a common emotion among mammals. One of the books I had to read when I worked with the zoo's education department last year was "When Elephants Weep"

The authors, Masson and McCarthy, supply compelling evidence that animals do experience some of the same emotions that humans do. The book is simple to understand. I recommend discussing it with your children. You will never look at animals in the same light after reading the book.

My parents went and saw this movie, and the audience also cheered and clapped loudly. I really want to see it but haven't yet.

I don't think animals understand the concept of winning a race. I think they know when they are leading the pack, though.

Actually I was listening to an interview with Laurie Hillenbrand, the author of Seabiscuit book that the movie is based on, and she says they do know when they have one, and are bred to be very competitive, and that was Seabiscuits real charm--that he was nothing special to look at, had a lousy gait, but had a true competitive heart.

Having been around horses that compete, they do primp and seem to put on airs when they have won something. (Throughbreds are also known to race each other in the pasture just for kicks as well). There is a buzz around them when they win, and they know it. (However, this could easily be attributed to the people who spend so much time around the animal, wanting so badly for them to have human qualities.)
I dunno...I like to think they know, I am sure they feed off ques from their trainers and owners that--"Oh gee, I must have done well!"
I will defer to the author and expert on throughbred horses who stated quite forcefully that they do in fact know, and care if they win, and are bred to race.

Some horse whisperers make whispered mention of glue factories. That's all I'm sayin'. Things can get ugly when there's gambling and the mob involved.

I asked my father, who has been handicapping most of his life, if horses know they have won a race. He says he thinks so; they can tell they've done something special and are being rewarded.
