Buying out the opportune time

All of my life, I was told by the Society that I should “buy out the opportune time”. To them, this phrase meant that I should cut down on watching TV or some other worthless activity, and of course, spend that newfound time worshipping the great publishing company.

Well, since I stopped going to meetings on April 10, 2002, I have discovered an entirely new and far more enjoyable application for the admonition to “buy out the opportune time.” Whenever I find myself doing something fun or relaxing when I should be at a meeting or service, this phrase invariably comes to mind – particularly if I happen to see others enslaved.

For example, a few weeks ago I was out garage sailing with my son on Saturday morning when we passed the KH. A few from our Bookstudy group were heading to their cars. There was a time when I would have felt very embarrassed for being seen in a secular activity on a Saturday morning. But, I suddenly realized that I didn’t feel bad at all. I felt great. If anything, I felt sorry for the drones.

Anyway, now that I have Tuesday night, Thursday night, Saturday morning, and Sunday afternoon free – every week – I have a long list of things that are more fun than meetings. Such as:

    - sleeping in

    - reading

    - having breakfast at McDonalds

    - chess tournaments

    - watching football games

    - garage sailing

    - gardening

    - sitting on the deck, under the umbrella with a book and a beer

I spend more time with my kids than I did as a Witness and my yard looks better than it ever has before.

I have indeed “bought out the opportune time”. Thank you, Watchtower Society, for one useful lesson. Even if the application was wrong, the words were right.

What do you do with your new time?

I read lots of books that are 'frowned upon' by the Society

and I spend time UNSUPERVISED! (oh, my!) with members of the OPPOSITE SEX!! (gasp) WITHOUT the intent of marrying them!!!

:P i'm with you on this one, buying out the opportune time is grrrrreat

I've been out 2 years now. In the beginning I would pass KH see the poor drones headed to their cars for survice on Saturday mornings when I would be headed out to spend the day with my incrediable fun new man in my life. You know I found myself smiling and feeling so good. Then I would marvel at such a good feeling. Don't recall ever feeling that good headed out in the door to door with my now ex-husband and spending the day preaching to people who didn't want me there in the first place. My children crying in the back seat miserable at another Saturday wasted when all they wanted to do was play and watch cartoons. Thankfully my oldest son is free of the nonsense now. But still have one son who obediently aux. pioneered this month to please his Dad. I wish he could taste the freedom. Perhaps the more time he spends with me he will. I can only hope so.

I love my Tuesday, Thursday evenings watching TV with my now adorable sweet husband. No rushing off to boring meetings. Love that Sci-fi Channel, and Tuesday Declassified. Saturday morning sleeping in. Sunday morning not being filled with anxiety of having to sit in the KH for 2 hrs plus being free of the door to door work, and wasting an entire day serving the WTS.

I feel sorry for those who are not enlightened, and fearful of being such. Poor Poor Borg drones, do they realize how perfectly they resemble those Star Trek characters.

Let's see, I no longer attend 5 meetings a week, which I have to prepare for, and I no longer spend a bare minimum 10 hours a month banging on people's doors preaching the good news selling magazines.

What do I do with all my extra time?

    I LIVE

Honestly, I'm already so busy between work, family life, chores and friends, that I really don't know how I'd fit in three meetings a week, preparation, and field service. Although, I suppose if I had one iota of interest in fitting those things into my life, I might make an effort. ;)

Evildoer... I don't think you would make a good JW then.

    *** km 12/98 p. 3 Build Your Life Around Jehovah’s Service ***

What does it mean to build our lives around Jehovah’s service? It means making Jehovah the very center of our lives. It involves focusing on the Kingdom as our main concern. It entails obeying God in all the activities of our daily lives. It requires pouring our heart into our personal, family, and congregational study of the Bible and into our field ministry, making these our priorities. (Eccl. 12:13; Matt. 6:33) Such an obedient course results in a rock-solid faith, which will not collapse in the face of any storms of adversity that may strike
