    PETE ZAHUT & JWGONEBAD:

I definitely think there are more anti-Witnesses than pro-Witnesses around. This number would include DFd, DAd, faders and never-baptized ones.

That's quite a large number of people who were exposed to the Witness religion and who have negative feelings that range from disinterest or mild dislike to foaming-at-the-mouth-I-want-payback kind of hatred.

I consider myself somewhere in the middle. My problem is that the people I would have liked to tell-off are dead. So, the monster is ever changing. That's why many ex-JWs are angry: they can't get satisfaction because the persons who hurt them are not around anymore to answer for what they did.

If you count children of JWs who never got baptised then probably there are more former JWs than JWs. But it would be difficult to arrive at an estimate for that number.

Maybe use the New Zealand census data and extrapolate to worldwide membership.

According to the exJW reddit, they use a term called "the 33% club":

The 33% club does not refer to born-ins. 33% is the number of all Jehovah's Witnesses who ultimately leave the religion, whether they are born-ins, converts or whatever. 33% of all Jehovah's Witnesses ultimately leave the religion. There is some confusion about born-ins, because (oddly) 33% also applies to them, but not in the same way. Only 33% of born-ins stay in the religion (67% of them leave) - so as you can see, this is the opposite of what the trophy is about!

As regards to there being more former members than active members, i think it's more likely there being more ex-members since the religions inception than there are active members today. So more people have left than joined.

I think it is a really good point, that when we are thinking about ex JW numbers against current JWs, providing the average publisher figure goes up each year then there will be more JWs than ex JWs. However the great thing about ex JWs is that they have plenty of family and friends who are not JWs and who often will tell about the organisation, and that means those family and friends will steer well clear of the organisation. So really as every day passes, more and more people throughout the world will realize this is a cult to avoid at all costs.

I know personally and online far more exjws than I ever did JWs when still in so it wouldn't surprise me at all if we do outnumber those still in.

    If I had to guess...

..I'd say that there were considerably more full-on XJWs than active still-ins (and let's not discount faders, fakers, and fence-sitters).

For perspective's sake, it is important to realize there is a difference in the way a neutral surveying organization like Pew Research defines "leaving", vs. how a JW might define it. Neutral organizations don't care about arbitrary distinctions with no external difference, (such as if a person is "baptized" or not). Many JWs would not consider a non-baptized person that leaves to have left the religion, since in their eyes they were never a member to begin with. Many, many leave without ever getting "baptized" formally, and this is counted toward the 66% figure.

Pew makes this very simple, (and most meaningful in the practical sense). Anyone who was raised in or believed at some point then chose to stop believing later in life is considered to be a person that "left". They apply the same criteria to all religions, as they should.

    Hello everyone and longgone,

I hope that the following will help !

    From: *** yb70 p. 314 1969—A Year of Praise ***

This tremendous increase, of course, makes Jehovah’s witnesses very happy, and when we look at the new peak in publishers for the 1969 service year we find that the final count came to 1,336,112.

To the number above you have to add the numbers of baptized from

    YEARS 1970 – 1979 Total 1.793.898

    YEARS 1980 – 1989 Total 1.863.106

    YEARS 1990- 1999 Total 3.234.811

    YEARS 2000 – 2009 Total 2.699.141

    YEARS 2010 – 2013 Total 1.103.620

    YEARS 2014 – 2015 Total 800.389

The bove figures will give a

    GRAND TOTAL OF POTENTIAL .

    PUBLISHERS 12.831.077

    ***Average Publishers 2016 8.132.358

    **The difference is 4.698.719 (-)

At this point you’ll have to make allowance for those who have died

    (1% each year see yb74 page 254 par.4 )

    During a period of 46 years Total 1.283.107 (a)

Then also make allowance for those disfellowshipped or

    considered disassociated -see quotes below)

    Let’s befair and take 25000/yearx46 years Total 1.125.000 (b)

    This will give a grand total of 2.408.107 (a + b)

Then deduct from **The difference 4.698.719 (-)

It will give a total of 2.290.612 missing baptized br. & sist.

Adding the total (b) the result will be:

    3.415.612 bptz. JW”s gone

This correspond to a loss of 42% of the total of the Average Publ.

    for the year 2016

    Average Publishers 2016 8.132.358

    Or if you take:

    Peak Publishers 2016 ……8.240.847

This will correspond to a loss of 41,45% of the total Peak Publishers

    for the year 2016

This sobering truth has forcefully been brought home to us by the exclusion of over 40,000 erring individuals from fellowship with the Christian congregation during the past service year, largely because of grossly wrong conduct.

. Of the more than 3,000,000 publishers of the good news last year, upwards of 37,000 were disfellowshipped for conduct unbecoming a Christian. That amounts to a ratio of about one in 80

It is to be noted, also, that during the past year, 36,638 individuals had to be disfellowshipped from the Christian congregation, the greater number of them for practicing immorality.

Thus, in the United States (where there are now more than half a million Christian witnesses of Jehovah), during the ten-year period from 1963 to 1973, 36,671 persons had to be disfellowshiped for various kinds of serious wrongdoing.

    *** w65 6/15 p. 373 par. 25 The Great Potter Molds Human Vessels ***

The fact that there were some 3,000 disfellowshipings in the United States alone during the 1964 service year shows how necessary this message against uncleanness is even for God’s people.

UNDOING OF MINISTERS BY BAD MORALS

19 The need of constant, prayerful vigilance is emphasized by information from the Service Department at the Brooklyn headquarters of the Watch Tower Bible & Tract Society. This has to do with those dedicated baptized members belonging to the thousands of congregations in the United States of North America. For each of the five years from March, 1952, to April, 1957, there was an average of 500 members that were disfellowshiped for flagrant misdeeds that cannot be tolerated inside of Jehovah’s congregation. However, during the year from April, 1957, to April, 1958, the number rose sharply above that yearly average of 500, to 1,334 delinquent members, or more than two and a half times as many. We dare not dull the shock of this startling information by arguing that this may, in part, be due to the American congregations’ having at least 18,537 new persons associating themselves with the witnessing activities during those twelve months. That number of new ones is less than one twelfth of the 226,797 that proclaimed the Kingdom good news in America during April of 1958, about 65 percent of which proclaimers are dedicated and baptized. So what are 1,334 delinquents compared with more than 147,000 dedicated, baptized members? Less than 1 percent.

20 Though 1,334 may be less than 1 percent, this sudden jump to that number definitely discloses that more than twice as many as in previous years have failed to watch themselves and act wisely during the wicked days of 1957-1958. With 3,718 or more congregations functioning in the United States of North America, about one out of every three congregations could be affected by 1,334 disfellowshipings.

done4good: "Many JWs would not consider a non-baptized person that leaves to have left the religion, since in their eyes they were never a member to begin with."...

    WRONG!

An interested person studies first. After some 'progress' he/she then becomes a publisher. Said publisher is then assigned a publisher card, at which time they are considered a member of the congregation. Then later after further indoctrination the student/publisher gets baptized and is officially dubed a JDub. If said publisher (though not baptized) later decides to not go out in field service, fails to report time and not attend meetings...said unbaptized member is labeled inactive and could potentially be 'marked' as bad association. For all intense and purposes this once publisher, now inactive and never baptized individual is considered to have 'left' the organization...of which there are tons and tons of ex-publishers though unbaptized JWs! There are literally tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of JW children who were once non-baptized publishers, never baptized who have left the organization and treated like outcasts by family and fiends. Add to these ex-publisher, never baptized JW youth the amount of adult Bible studies who over the years also attended meetings, became publishers, were assigned publisher cards and became members of their congregation then got cold feet and stopped shy of baptism...your really getting into the millions and millions of "ex-JWs" who have left the organization!

Something to keep in mind...when a Bible study, whether JW youth family members or adults from the community, become publishers and assigned publisher cards...the preaching activity and hours of these un-baptized publishers is reflected in the Year Book totals that the organization publishes annually.
