They could care less about the older ones. The only thing they care about is loyalty and the almighty dollar. They need donations and old peoples estates being willed to WT. The old people will just have to "deal with it. " Sad but true!

We have a senior member who is going to have a fit when she sees there will be no more calendars printed.

The switch to electronics involves spending money to acquire the needed hardware.

Maybe WT is making money every time someone buys a tablet. The org probably owns a lot of tech-y stocks.

ipad = Internet pornography access device

That's what WT used to say it stood for. They clearly instructed that in a "Christian home", Internet access should only be available on a computer in a public area where everyone could monitor what was being accessed. With the new WT direction you can take your ipad and access the Interwebs while in the bathroom. Or course, one would only look at the JW website, right?

Are the witnesses the only religion making this push to digital?

I can't think of anyone else who badgers their flock to abandon print.

As far as I know, yes. I've never heard of this and I really don't understand the point of making people feel uncomfortable (and "unspiritual") about using print books and a hard-copy Bible. Other churches allow both and it would never be mentioned as an issue or measure of devotion to God. I'm not an oldie but I still like print books. There is still tremendous value in print. Just like Lieu mentioned, it's portable and not dependent on external conditions. With the Bible, sometimes it's much easier to go to multiple passages in a hard copy than waiting for your phone to load on slow wi-fi.

This is a case of the Watchtower not wanting to spend the money. Because they are the only supplier of these materials, they are the only one bearing the cost of publication--and they don't wanna. It's also much easier to alter and remove digital media. Huge benefit for a group that would rather not be reminded of its past or keep a paper trail of its inconsistencies.

She said she hates all the changes! I'm not sure if she knows about the calendar being discontinued yet. I of course couldn't say anything about it. 'I know nothing'.

No more calendar, really? When will this happen and why?

Outsiderlookingin exactly! As soon as I heard of the materials being available online I knew this had to be the direction it was heading. Require the cost of "publishing" to fall on the members, not the corperate coffers. Plus, changing " unfortunate" wording is created in an instant. Then claim the previous copy was "apostate" made up material. Even Jws that printed previous copy for themselves, if indoctrinated enough into this Orwellian organization, will believe it because they are told to believe it. The elderly, or poor just do it concern the FB and corporate. They "instruct"'the others to " look after them"'and voila, all responsibility is shifted to the r&f. Pretty d@mn convenient don't you say?

I've been gone from JWs a good while. Please clarify. Do you mean to say that the practice of brining a printed bible to a meeting, and following along by flipping to scripture is not being done? What are the mechanics of this? Is it really "frowned upon" to be using paper literature?

They want you to use a tablet, open up a magazine pdf or something, and the probably just "look up" scriptures by hitting a hyperlink or something?

They way you all describe it, I almost want to go to a meeting to see how it goes down.

A side thought. Honest to God, in this world of technological overflow, digital phones, people on the sidewalks heads down texting, unfocused conversations with people when face to face distracted by their phones, non stop selfies, an overflow of video content in every place you go, and other ubiquitous digital bs (just my opinion), the idea of the JWs still slugging away by actually READING as a group with real books, however goofy the books, at least felt like they where sticking to some sort slower paced distraction free value set. To hear they are just going along with the technological overflow has to be a nightmare for older ones.

My Father couldn't use an iPad if his life depended upon it.

I've said it before and I'll keep on saying it...

This religion is a performance based one geared towards young able-bodied, able minded people. Once you get old and useless, they don't give a crap about you.
