When I suffered some loss what Jesus said came to my mind: “If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also.” (Mathew 5:40) Principle behind this statement made flash to me: ‘Here shirt is only a symbol of material things/comfort. If you suffer a loss, have the mind-set that I have no problem even if I suffer some greater loss,’ and my worry immediately disappeared.

Whether Jesus was a historical figure or not matters not if what he (supposedly) said happens to be of great practical help.

So what you are actually saying venus is that you can take the sayings of any mythical character in literature and apply it to yourself so long as its of benefit to you or anybody else.

That might be well and true to some extent ,however you wouldnt mould/build your whole life around that mythical character in literature would you ?

Their are plenty of authours who write about mythical characters that come out with pure gems in how to live ,be moral ,altuistic .and spend there life in the interests of others.

We dont worship them,or waste our life following such ficticious characters do we ?

Maybe your/our life would be more enhanced if we moulded our lives on the wise sayings of real life people that have ever lived. Without idolising them or worshipping them .

    Just saying.

Edit to add : If I havent welcomed you before I do so now

Just about every book, fiction and non-fiction, can be cherry picked for wise sayings.

How about the things that Jesus is quoted as saying that were harmful and destructive? Jesus has been used as justification for evil as much as for good.

The practicality of what Jesus supposedly said, has no bearing on Jesus Christ being a real historical figure.

As a religion I think Christianity stands or falls on Jesus' historicity (as well as his resurrection); but as an ethical philosophy Christianity no more depends on Jesus than Platonism does on Socrates. Christian ethics sans the religious dogma, whether it be in the form of Christian Deism or Christian Atheism or 'Infinite Way' monism, is the only way I see Christianity surviving in an educated society; it's the only variety of Christianity that deserves to survive.

Venus you are quite right. Jesus is a figure who we come back to again and again. Buddha is another figure like that and there are similarities between them and I'm thinking here in terms of humanity's riches and on the strength of this alone I would argue that the attention we give to such figures is worthwile and rewarding.

But there are other figures too that deserve attn - well Venus for example - she can be seen as love, as the virgin Mary, as eroticism, as love within marriage, as love without marriage, as lgbti love - etc etc

I have no idea of what you are trying to say.

If the talking snake is historical Jesus better be historical too. Without either, there would be no original sin -- cancelled. (all in the same book)

I'm sure the words of Confucius were beneficial to many but one wouldn't want to shun their family members for not building their world around his sayings, or let one of them die because of misapplying his words to a medical issue.

I'm guessing he wouldn't have wanted that either.
