How and when did the "understanding" of the progressive ("new light") understanding start?

    Anybody knows?

    Thanks!

They use the word light to describe understanding....particularly bible understanding. Psalm 119:105 speaks of the word of god being a lamp to ones feet and ones pathway and Proverbs 4: 18 speaks of the path of the righteous becoming brighter and brighter until the full light of the day.

Assuming that they are the chosen ones, whenever what they formerly claimed about the Bible doesn't come about or makes sense anymore, they change their understanding. They make it seem as though this is a good thing even though it proves that they were wrong in the past and they've shunned those who pointed it out to them years before. It's amazing that they continue to claim that whatever they currently believe, is the absolute truth and you'd better believe it and pass it along to others. Even more amazing is the fact that God once again agrees with whatever they've come up with.

I agree with Pete. if you have that many flip-flops, you will have to find a way to justify your mistakes. They cannot blame Jesus or God's spirit for the mistakes. That just doesn't sound right. Thus they resort to their cop out, "the light is keeps getting brighter." By the way, it proves that they are not in direct contact with God, His spirit or Jesus. No red telephone connected to heaven, as they claim. They are guessing and embellishing the same as the rest of us.

    Thanks.

    Yes, I know that...

I was just wondering if anybody knows how and when it became a "belief" or a "doctrine"...

JW's have been altering their understanding of the Bible since the late 1800's and have continued down to our day. "New Light " isn't a doctrine, it's a term they've always used to refer to and or justify why they they change things.

The WT uses "new light" to have it both ways.

On the one hand, it's used to posit that the organization leaders understand more now that anyone else did in the first 20 centuries C.E. -- the light has gotten brighter in the end times for those who are "in the truth."

On the other hand, it's used to excuse all its previous errors and to make the latest adjustments look like never-ending blessings and revelations from Jehovah to the faithful and discreet slave.

Thanks to this sleight of hand, the vast majority of JWs don't notice that until 2013 the faithful and discreet slave didn't know who the faithful and discreet slave was (Russell v. all the anointed as a group v. the GB) nor did they understand who the domestics were (the anointed as individuals v. the anointed plus all the other sheep) to whom they were supposed to be providing good spiritual food in due season.

Nor do they notice that it could all change tomorrow when the light gets brighter still and what used to be "the truth" turns into "old light" which needs to be dismissed and forgotten.

Proverbs 4:18 is a CYA scripture they have used out of context for the last 140 years.
