For the most part if it's kept low key, like we did it when we were kids with sheets over our heads as ghosts and bobbing for apples, then it's harmless fun and a great opportunity to spend time as a family and community.
BUT I do think these days it's turned into rampant commercialism and yet another opportunity for big business to fleece the common people.
I also find it very disturbing that kids near me don't dress as cats, witches and silly ghosts anymore but as zombie 'dead schoolgirls' and 'dead cheerleaders' and 'chucky' - all a bit sick and perverted....

I say yes to observing Halloween. It is a night of fun. I do advocate safety so children do not get hit by cars--a good LED blinker on your back (red) and a good LED flashlight (white) for the front will enable drivers to see you. Also, those scumbags that put drugs, pins, and razor blades in products to be handed out as treats ought to be tried and then tortured. There simply is no excuse to hand out candy or pastries with razor blades or poison to children.
Now, with all the new LED lights, I wonder why people are not decorating as much for Halloween (and Christmas) as they were between 1998 and 2006.

Gawd nothing frightened my daughter when she was a kid. She loved Halloween, Lord of the Rings films, Harry Potter, Buffy. Now she loves Game of Thrones. Kids are very tough and they enjoy scary things. I'm glad I didn't have to stop her dressing up and going to parties at this time of year. -

I am not looking forward to it at all. I wanted to have fun and do something festive. But I have been unsuccessful in making plans.
I tried about three weeks ago to make plans with various people in my life, sadly to no avail.
This just reminds me of my social life that I lost in WT.
Not looking forward to it.

Also at my age its the only time I look good - all the white make up hides my age , eyeliner and blood red lipstick is flattering on any gal or guy!
and anyway ive always been a secret goth!

Kate I know. I think we live near each other too, but I have a lot of health problems and look a wreck so im too embarrased to meet people! I felt rotton not going to your birthday bash. I think we have a lot in comman too as I lost my eldest son in a watchtower induced tug of love as they are called 😢

As a non jw I can tell you most people do not give a thought to the historical beginnings of Halloween. When I was a kid we went at night and our parents never came with us. How weird would that have been? would have spoiled all our fun in our minds. As soon as it got dark we hit the neighborhood, the boys would even go as far as the next subdivision and would get home late. I think it officially ended at 10.
When my kids were little trick or treat was in the day time and all the parents went with the kids. Later they returned it to night time. Our school had a dress up 'book character' day (they had to read the book & report on it) right before Halloween so that was usually the kids Halloween costume as well. Not sure what the jw kids did for book character day as the jw's were not on my radar at that time. I wonder if the jw kids got to dress up for book character day? I think they probably started it because of jw's come to think of it, sounds pc enough.
Many families around here do a smaller area of trick or treat and go back to someone's house for kids party & food and adult beverages for the parents. Nice way to meet all the kids parents.
As for so much candy, the parent still has control of how much a kid can eat at any one time. Around here a dentist is offering kids 1.00 per pound of candy and will be sending it overseas to Military.
The costumes; I agree some are overtly sexual in some cases. I always made my kids costumes as did my mom. Old bridesmaids dresses did indeed get a second wearing in my house! lol

Funny, I just remembered as a kid we went to a door and the whole house was dark. There was a note on the door that they don't do Halloween, I think it might have even said they were jw's. Our little gang of suburban kids had never heard of them and that house/family was forever deemed 'weirdos' live there. Hey, we were little kids and pc was not a thing yet. Just sharing from the other side of things.
