Once again, I find myself fulminating in a Kingdom Hall, listening to a brain-dead, intinerant

spiritual predator( i.e. a Circuit Overseer) ramble on with Society-approved lies about the outside world:

"Business standards are getting worse and worse!"

    Really?

Are U.S. businesses still selling Negroes at auction?

Can you buy opium (Laudanum) at the corner store to keep your kids quiet?

Are young women still painting watch faces with Radium? and getting buried in lead coffins?

Can you post a sign that says "No Irish Need Apply?" How about "Colored drinking fountain"?

If you get hurt, can you collect disability? Or if old, Social Security? Worker's Comp, perhaps?

If your car is defectively dangerous, can you sue now?

Are women now legally protected against sexual harassment unlike past generations?

Can women head a major corporation? ( HP- Carly Fiorina)

Can a black man be a CEO? ( American Express - Chenault)

Do they still openly advertise hard liquor and cigarettes on TV?

Have major corporations publically apologized for mistakes? (Firestone and Japanese airlines)

Do you REALLY THINK the Watchtower would say "We apologize" FOR ANY REASON, Ever?

    Need I go on?

This is how the Watchtower survives:

by lying about "how bad things are"

by endlessly painting a picture of negativity, fear and pessimism,

and by ceaselessly JUDGING, JUDGING,JUDGING other people as wicked

while glorifying themselves and their pitiful organization's dwindling achievements.

God help the frauds who run the Watchtower Society if they ever were forced to abide

by the SUPERIOR standards of modern corporations instead of cringing behind the protection

    of being a religion.

    Imagine this headline:

"Class-action lawyers sue Watchtower, 'Armageddon Soon!' promise is Fraudulent"

Now, that's some case law I'd like to see!

    Good Post Met!

Are children in this country forced to work in dark, dank factories?

Did Upton Sinclair write "The Jungle" last year?

Can a gay person expect equal wages?

Can the elderly be discriminated against when applying for a job?

    And on and on.

Yet, the WT is just another doomsday organization dedicated to 'helping' you see how 'bad' the world is--and that their perfect organization is the only chance of true happiness!

Excellent thread. People here in the U.S. constantly complain about our "bad" economy. Guess what, they do not know the meaning of bad. Lisa and JT, you two have done an excellent job of putting things into perspective. I could be a lot worse, so perhaps we should be thankful for what we have. Is everything perfect ?? Of course not, and life has never been perfect, nor will we see perfection in our lives.

I am 66 years old and I know the meaning of hard times, because I've lived them. Right now almost everyone is doing just fine compared to past years. Bug

I agree that the Watchtower Society feeds off the bad news. It's the only way it can justify its position that we are living in the "last days."

On the other hand, we shouldn't have an insulated view of how good it is in the world by considering the benefits that have been won here in the U.S. There are still deplorable conditions in most of the world. Slavery is still practiced. Children are still being worked to death. Women are still second class citizens or chattel.

The fact is that in most of the world people still have no decent shelter, no adequate food and wear tattered and patched clothing...if they are fortunate to have it at all. Let us not forget that we live in a part of the world that has won these things in just the last hundred years or so. And it is possible that these same conditions could return if a collapse of our western civilization occurs.

No, I don't agree with the Watchtower Society. But I also don't think we should judge the condition of the majority of mankind by our own narrow standards.

    Mizpah,

While I agree with you, I think the shoe fits the other foot as well. It would have been acceptable for the speaker to note that although great strides have been made in this country and others, we must be ever mindful that not all of humanity has the benefit of living under these conditions.

Of course, that would have meant admitting that there is some good news, and the point is, they can't do that.

No, but their allies , Saudi arabia & kuwait did, or bought them until at least 1974.

I'm sorry if I sound like a cultural chauvinist in this politically correct age but it should

be obvious that the solution to these horrors , mostly in the third world, is good, socially democratic

government. If the Watchtower ran any country, it would look a lot like oppressive Iran, complete with young people trying to overthrow it.

I wish the UN well in their attempts to 'rebuild nations'. So far, they don't seem to have much success.

Finding a benevolent dictator these days ( Ataturk, Lee of Singapore ) is a tough job. I'm proud to live in a Western

nation built on a tradition of "the inherent rights of man" - the alternative doesn't look very pleasant - including JW-land.

    LDH:

It's really even worse than that. The Watchtower is represented in those same countries where poverty and sickness abound. Yet, nothing is done to alleviate the suffering right around them. Instead, they exploit the people to support them and their ministry. The only help offered is within the congregations...and even here, it is not the Watchtower Society...but individuals in the congregation.

At least some of the other missionary groups are actively involved in bettering the lives of people. Many are trained nurses and doctors. The whole lesson of being a good neighbor is illustrated by Jesus in his parable of the Good Samaritan. He saw a fellow human suffering...and he did something to aid him. But Jehovah's Witnesses in these countries are more like the Priest and Levite of that same illustration.

    metatron:

Our own government's record as a "democratic" nation is much to be desired. It has actually overthrown "socially democratic governments" (Iran,Guatemala, Chile, etc.) to install dictatorships. It didn't give "a hang" for the people and their well being. It chose those leaders that were convenient to our own agenda. And it still supports oppressive government like Saudi Arabia. It is one of the reasons that there is such contempt for the U.S. throughout the world.

Where was our "tradition of the inherent rights of man" in these cases? It seems that we want our rights even at the cost of the rights of others.
