"True Story" - movie about Christian Longo

I just watched "True Story" on Netflix.

Disturbing. It is about the relationship between Christian Longo and the journalist, Mike Finkel, who wrote a book about Londo's murder of his family.

A person has to wonder about how dangerous it is to plant the notion of the dead being resurrected into the mind of a narcissist. Regardless of Londo being a "disfellowshipped" JW, it still wouldn't change the idea that he could murder his entire family and that they would, someday, have a chance at "life forever in paradise". And, if he is executed, that he would get to come back and just say "sorry about that...ain't life grand now?"

I doubt many JW's believe they would be resurrected after doing much less that that nut case did. The real problem with JW teachings is the unbiblical teaching that your consciousness will cease upon death.

None of us will ever be able to stop being conscious. It will go on forever and ever and ever and ever. God even let's us choose where we will spend eternity, depending on what we do with Jesus.

The simply fact is that we were made in the image of an eternal being. Our consciousness is eternal, and there is nothing either you or I or anyone else in the universe can do about it.

There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

Perry, if your consciousness goes on forever, what were you thinking about 100 years ago?

Oh, we have a beginning alright, just no end. Imagine being without a body, in total darkness for eternity, separated from God and anything that could be called good.

We were made for a purpose, and that is to be able to comprehend God and much of his creations, and to enjoy him and fellowship with him forever. This characteristic of the construction of man was necessary since God is eternal.

Perry, that doesn't make sense to me. If we have no end then we couldn't have had a beginning.

Only God himself had no beginning. He alone is unique in that regard, existing completely outside of time, yet able to transcend time at will. Time was just another invention of his.

You could say this about any religion that teaches life after death, there have always been people who were unbalanced and saw death as a fast track to a better life for their family. While there is zero evidence for life after death, the main problem is not belief in it, but the mental illness that would lead someone to see that as a viable option.

That being said, there is something about the JW belief system that fosters black and white thinking in many, and that does influence the unbalanced and it is dangerous. They gleefully look forward to the violent death of most of the world's population, they kick people out for not blindly accepting everything said by the GB and force everyone to shun them, tearing apart families and causing depression in many, even suicides. They encourage people to refuse blood transfusions even at risk of death and keep intelligent young people from getting an education, chaining them to low level jobs and reduced incomes. In most people it simply makes them less compassionate, more judgemental and less able to think rationally, but in the unbalanced the consequences can be tragic.

There's plenty of evidence for those that look for it, not the least of which was the resurrection of Jesus himself.

Damn...I should have just posted a link to the movie without comments. I did not intend this to become a debate about "life after death" or about Jebus. I was more concerned with how the distorted JW thinking could have had an effect on this murderer's actions seeing as he was raised in a strict JW family.

I would remove my comments if I could....but carry on. Go ahead and make this about Jebus if you want, Perry. Sheesh. I was thinking more along the lines of how JW thinking can upset a person's psychological balance and instead...we get quotes about bibble verses. Typical. Disappointing, but...typical.

LisaRose, your comments are on track with what I was getting at. There have been other JW murderers who thought that their "loved ones" would get their chance at living forever if they were removed before Armageddon...and, they have also thought that they themselves would get that "second chance" at life forever because of their belief in everybody being resurrected, including themselves, provided they died before the big day. Which makes the death penalty a viable option for them as a solution rather than a punishment.

I suppose we will never know why this idiot, Christian Longo, murdered his wife and children, but, it is not unusual to speculate on what it is that allows a mentally unbalanced person to act out violently.
