It is an interesting case of why "equal pay" isn't quite what you think it is. Now the US Soccer Federation has called their bluff and is offering both men and women the exact same contract - neither side is happy.
People only ever watch womens soccer once every 4 years, when there is an olympics, and if there are no other events on that timeslot.
They can't and don't sell merchandise, they can't and don't attract large crowds of ticket payers - they are not worth the money, it comes down to basic economics.
Why? Nothing todo with gender - it's just not exciting, they lack the skill and commitment of professional male players.
Same reason large crowds don't go to watch the local pub team play and why they aren't paid multi $m deals too.
Update on this. Women say: equal pay means women get more.
Isn't it more likely that the USA women's team would win the world cup than the men's team? In which case, they won't want to risk sharing that money LoL (although I remember the men's team doing super well in the 90s and I supported them all the way when England dropped out).
The women cynically wanted more. The men can also deal with more risk because they get paid more playing for their clubs.

Well, they're back. The women's US soccer team isn't giving up. After losing their previous case, the US Soccer Federation decided to offer the women the EXACT same contract as the men, word-for-word. They turned it down. They've since accepted a renewed contract, and now they are back in court suing that the contract they just accepted is discriminatory and unequal.
Congats US team - you continue to play yourself.

Pffft, ha ha. Right. They would be the most watched, highest paid women in the world of sports. The men's pole dancing team would have some, but not nearly the amount, of popularity. Then maybe the men can sue for equal pay for "equal work". They could say stuff like, "We have to work 10 times as many poles as the women.."
men deserve more, because more than one pole is involved. They raise their own pole. it is polarizing.

Wow, this drama continues. So now the USSF has reached a settlement with the women, even though the women lost in court, and as a factual matter it was determined that the women were paid more. It boils down to the USSF president being a woke woman.
But you can't pull money out of thin air. The men get paid more because they generate more revenue. So the settlement relies on the men agreeing to hand over a large chunk of their winnings. USSF just shifted the burden to the men's team: Either white-knight and hand over millions to the women from your earnings, or be called bigot misogynistic assholes.
It's time for the men to just disagree, tell the women they aren't as popular, just deal with it, and hold their ground.
