I have seen a few comments about the NWT being an altered version of the bible and I must admit that when they released the new one it did not sit right with me.
I want to read the bible but not the NWT. I also do not want to read one that has the thee and thou and ye etc because that will do my head in.
What translations do you recommend?
NASB (New American Standard Bible)
NIV (New International Version)
ESV (English Standard Version)
How to know if these versions are just like the NWT, translated in a way to fit some particular Christian dogma?!

I use the New King James Version (NKJV) but thats just a personal preference, since it was the Bible we used to own before getting the NWT.
I have found the NIV to be good.

Easy answer - don't use one, use several - and when you feel impelled to compare contrasting verses, seek out a Hebrew/Greek concordance on-line to establish which translation is nearer the original meaning.
You'll eventually see that various translations have been lazy/doctrinally biased, and simply plagiarised other badly translated verses; e.g Revelation 5:10 - "And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth." (King James Version)
The RNWT copied the word 'kings' - instead of using 'kingdom' as other Bibles do, and changed the Greek word for 'on' into 'over.' Some other translations do likewise.
New International Version is a fine translation. I beleive it's used and accepted my the majority of scholars.

If you understand Patwa, then I'd go for Di Jamiekan Nyuu Testiment (JNT) as it makes Bible reading so much more fun, especially when reading Jesus' words with a Jamaican accent!
