My mum is very much in and a devout JW.

However she doesn't shun me, her disfellowshipped son and she goes to Yoga courses too.

I'm surprised to hear dubs actually doing yoga. Where I live, doing yoga is considered demonized. Not sure what the policy is on it but I know that pretty much anything remotely spiritualistic can get a good dub in big trouble.

Good for them if they have found something to make them feel good! With all the depressing people in the organization, you would think Watchtower would change their thinking on the matter?

The earliest reference to Yoga that I can find in the Watchtower Societies publications is in the February 18, 1942 CONSOLATION Magazine on page 30. Let the Fear Mongering begin! :

"The Yogis of India, in order to make conditions easy for the demons, commence with exercises to stupefy the mind. They hold one object in the mind's eye from periods varying from a few seconds to days, according to adaptability. Then follow intense breathing exercises, and afterward extremely difficult and demonized exercises which twist the human body in terrible convulsive positions; and only a Satanic mind could conceive of thus dishonoring the body Jehovah gave. These postures are held indefinitely; thus showing the entire lack of reason behind it, and complete demoniac influence."

a partial snip of sparkys posted quote from the Consolation Magazine:

this sounds like they could be describing the way it feels to sit in a stadium seat in dress clothes for 3 days at a convention.

I love yoga, but it's the one thing that my still in husband cannot handle. He thinks it's evil . Even went to the elders for help. They came up with a watchtower or something from 1980 or so . I pointed out that my yoga class was nothing like the description in th WT but they can't believe that it's not all about religion any more. ☚ī¸

Also they thought that the wt article would change my mind about yoga within seconds and were surprised it didn't.

'But you would not make Jehovah unhappy, would you?'

'please show me in the bible that Jehovah will be unhappy when I do yoga?'

'but you know he doesn't like that kind of things'

    'no I don't.'

I think it's idiot how JW all 'know' what Jehovah thinks, likes, not likes ...even when there's nothing about it in the bible.

But there's youtube so no need to go outside for lessons 😁

Yoga is one of the best things that has happened to me personally. I tried it once before I started figuring out TTATT. It might even have been one of the things that made me question my beliefs. How could something so good, and peaceful, and enlightening be wrong? It isn't. Whether you're using it for fitness, to reduce stress, or for the spiritual side of the practice, I think it has countless benefits. I'm more confident and open, just more positive about life after I practice.
