The Orpheum Theatre Group decided not to include the 1939 movie about a plantation in the Civil War-era South in its 2018 Summer Movie Series after feedback from patrons following the last screening Aug. 11.

Christopher claiming he discovered America...how could he discover something that was already inhabited

    Those are orthogonal concepts.

What Columbus and others did was discover that the known world didn't match the actual world and that we could navigate across and around it. Sure, there were people there - were any of them sailing across to discover our world? They took huge risks and I think their bravery and exploration should be commemorated - people focus on "the man" but we don't celebrate that, most people never knew / never care about the people, they care about what they achieved.

They lived in different times to the one we live in now - is it fair to judge them based on our society and civilization? If it *is* then that should surely apply even more to letting people judge other civilizations and cultures on the planet right now, wouldn't it?

I think part of the reason the radical left are so crazy about painting ancient figures as racist and vile for doing things that were considered the norm back then is to tell their own adherents that they too should expect that at any moment different morals can be dictated and they too will be condemned as vile racists!

"Christopher Columbus could be next on the monuments chopping block"

Why not? He didn't discover America. Did he? Wasn't there a bunch of Indians here already? Wasn't there some viking here in America before Columbus?

Just like changing religion or any other tradition, as our values and knowledge change, we have to review our list of heroes.

I am all for getting rid of Columbus as a hero or someone who should be memorialized? If the white supremacists or Eurocentric people want to keep, let's go at it. Make your case, using our current values and knowledge.

It has nothing to do with Columbus being racist or not, it has to do with his contributions to advancing humanity. Columbus skill as better than average explorer/navigator should be recognized, but that's it. He made no contributions to make the world a better place. Instead he opened the door to the destruction and exploitation of humans by other humans. Not necessarily his fault.

Columbus merit is the same as that of many other brave explorers of whom most people never heard.

I think that all of us, had on a way or another benefited from the discoveries, this Continent eventually became quite different from the European ancestors and in some respects I think that it has produced most of the rights and liberties associated with modern society.

The savagery and domination of the natives was no different that the Biblical tales about Israel and the Canaanites.

We have to put things in perspective and just think at the alternatives, at any rate we can't change history.

I myself have never considered Columbus as a Saint or Reformer, just as an explorer that by accident got to some new lands. The fact that he was the first one is what makes him notable; too bad for the other explorers that have been ignored.

All of them had one thing in common, ambition and greed. None of them including Columbus was example of human rights, as a matter of fact very few humans are.

Even today, what is the real purpose of space exploration?

    $$$$$$$ and Power

never a jw: You seem to be arguing for statues of perfect people or, no statues.

Name a hero and I'll tell you something wrong with them. Ghandi was a racist, MLK was a homophobe.

True. That's why we credit the founding fathers of the U.S. and the French enlightenment and the English philosophers. Great ideas matter much more than braving the Atlantic. Put Columbus where he belongs: a brave and skillful explorer, nothing more. He didn't discover anything new, nor did he contribute to our freedoms and modern values. Those freedoms and values are the legacy of great European minds, but Columbus was not among them
