Awesome, Terry! I played over both games. You like to go right after the king, don’t you!

    so cool

Interesting games, Terry, but I sometimes felt as if I was watching Petrosian play. I had no idea why certain moves were played but there must have been some strategy behind them. In your first game in move 62 your opponent (black) played Ra7-a8. Why? It gave him no strategic advantage and lost him the game five moves later.

Were you already playing chess when that infamous Awake! article came out in 1973 "Chess What Kind of Game Is It?". "Infamous" to those of us who had drooled over every game of the World Championship the year before!

    Ra7-a8 was "mysterious".

I'd describe it as a "temporizing" move when you don't think you have anything
to do to improve your situation. Just killing time until your opponent makes a weak move.

I DO REMEMBER that stupid AWAKE! article.
I didn't know any JW's who actually played chess.
Every once an awhile, the magazines would have an article which indicated mental illness

on the part of the writer. We all just shrugged and went about our regular daily life.
The 1972 World Championship in chess woke everybody up who was interested in chess

and plenty of folks who didn't even know how it was played.

The grand march to Armageddon was the main concern at that time since "75" was the big date.
I was searching for my Dad in 72, but I stopped to watch the portion of the games televised.
I didn't really get serious until the late 90's.
Even so, making progress seemed beyond my grasp. Only lately have the threads come together better than before--mainly through watching Coffee Chess on YouTube :)

Terry! There you go again! Writing so beautifully even when it comes to Chess. I use to play in the seventies even when that Awake came out it didn't stop some Bethelites who use to come over to my place to play and have a few beers. Now at 72 I have to think it through much longer. I have every game Bobby Fischer played in one book. Blueblades
