I don't know too much about the 'Mormons' , but do the missionaries have to report their field service time also? These cartoons seems to imply that:

About 30 years ago when I was still a JW, and a regular pioneer, I asked a return visit about the Mormons (he was a member of that religion), and I asked him about the Mormons I saw going from door to door as well. He told me that it is a requirement for a young man to do that for only two years, and only if they are going to be a leader of the church, as part of their training. No women do this he said when I asked him about that. He was curious about the JWs and their field ministry activity, so it was a two-way conversation.

It makes sense that Watchtower would copy the Mormons. Mormons are only slightly older as a religion than the Watchtower, but there are about twice as many Mormons in the world as Jehovah's Witnesses - 17 or 18 million (according to the two Missionaries who recently came to my house) vs about 8.5 million JWs.

I too believe that the Governing Body is trying to copy the Mormon's success.

Scenicviewer ; that is true about the 18mill membership. What he didn’t tell you was that out of that figure there is some where between 60-70% inactivity rates. So this would bring the membership figures down to about 6.5 - 7.2 million pimi lds members. So when you factor in that been counted as an active jw is set so much higher for been an active LDS. There could quite possibly be more pimi JWs than there could be pimi mormons. That been said I would think both religions would probably sit around the 20 million mark (give or take a couple hundred thousand or so). If your going to make a comparison between the two faiths my suggestion would be to use the memorial figures. To be honest I think the religion that could be bigger than the JWs or the lds could be the SDA, although I don’t think there would be much in it (and they claim there sabbath services have a weekly attendance of 30 million. I certainly can see the SDA becoming the dominant of the 3 religions in the future.

I don’t think the JWs ever really had an original idea. Russell stole most his ideas from the Millerites and john Aquila Brown. Since then the other stole ideas from the seventh day Adventist’s and they even stole the idea of 1975 from Herbert Armstrong. Now it would seam they are getting their cues from Scientology and the Mormons.

I was a 23 year old dub when the watchtower started "the elder arrangement" ...another copy from the Mormons.

I was on the way out by then.

Watchtower wishes it could achieve what LDS has achieved- whacky cult accepted into the mainstream, tithing, and members who are rich and in politics.

A cult is a cult is a cult. Many similarities. I could compare them to Scientology and many things would be similar, mostly having to do with ex-members and having to reach higher levels to learn other secrets of the cult.

But each has their particular strain of whackof- with Watchtower it's Armageddon around the next corner, blood transfusions, keeping out of the military and politics.
