I personally feel that vaccinations are beneficial. There has been a modern movement that vaccinations are more harmful than beneficial to which I disagree. What is your stance as an ex jw on vaccinating your children?

The scientific evidence is in (actually it was always in), vaccinations are good. Right now, we have a measles outbreak here in Washington State and in Oregon. The people getting it have not been vaccinated.

The Society, back in the day.......... was totally ignorant about vaccines. So of course they rallied against them.

Here's a sampling from the Golden Age Magizine which became the Awake!

"From 1921 to 1952, the Golden Age presented information against vaccinations. To cement this viewpoint in the minds of followers, vaccinations were described as worthless, harmful from a medical standpoint, and morally wrong from a biblical standpoint.

"Vaccination never prevented anything and never will, and is the most barbarous practice... Golden Age 1921 Oct 12 p.17

"Thinking people would rather have smallpox than vaccination, because the latter sows the seed of syphilis, cancers,................ even leprosy and many other loathsome affections. Hence the practice of vaccination is a crime, an outrage and a delusion." Golden Age 1929 May 1 p.502

"Vaccination is a direct violation of the everlasting covenant that God made with Noah after the flood." Golden Age 1931 Feb 4 p.293

The Golden Age 1931, February 4 issue devoted 10 pages to why vaccinations were not for Christians. The index page to the 1931 article claimed this as the viewpoint of the Creator.

“A long acquaintance with the literature of the Witnesses leads one to the conclusion that they live in the intellectual `twilight zone.’ … Whenever their literature strays onto the fields of philosophy, academic theology, science or any severe mental discipline their ideas at best mirror popular misconceptions, at worst they are completely nonsensical.” [Alan Rogerson, Millions Now Living Will Never Die: A Study of Jehovah’s Witnesses, p. 116, Constable, London, 1969]

anti-vaxxers, flat-earthers, creationists, 9/11 conspiracy nutters - they are all the same sort.

The difference is that anti-vaxxers are a threat to children.

Not getting vaccinated makes a person who gets sick become a carrier, infecting others who haven't gotten vaccinated. They become part of the problem.

I would add "noblooders" to your list, Cofty.

All of the above are irrational people. They are more concerned with possible "harmful ingredients" than they are with the benefits of vaccines. For one thing, death from contracting a preventable disease is a far more harmful outcome than putting a vaccination into the body. Just like blood transfusions, they ignore the benefits and focus on a negligible possibility. Scared of their own shadow.

I was astounded when I read an article that parents are taking their children to "chicken pox parties". They actually believe that introducing a virus into their child's body is a better outcome than preventing a virus from permanently taking up residence in their child. They actually believe that chicken pox is a harmless childhood disease and have ignored completely that the same virus has a +30% chance of causing an adult who carries it untold suffering later in life. Adults who have had chicken pox as a child have a one in three chance of that virus erupting into a shingles outbreak. And yet those parents think they are doing their kids a favor by giving them chicken pox.

The anti-vax movement is a cult.

I was a child in the 50's and had a friend in ballet class and in school who contracted polio. The image of her months later in massive steel leg braces and hollowed out eyes, frail body can still haunt me. Vaccines are life saving. When I was 11 I had a severe case of measles which morphed into scarlet fever and I was on the verge of rheumatic fever. There was no measles vaccine back then...had there been I would not have gone through that awful time and been spared the repercussions from it.

In my opinion the anti vaccine stance is ill advised. Not only does the child face risk, but those he or she comes in contact with, should the child contract one of the diseases vaccines protect against.

It should be up to each parent, per vaccination and based on actual facts and not pro-pharma propaganda or some religious leader that takes a blanket stand against all vaccinations. Each shot should be weighed with the risks against the benefits, and can such shots be made safer and more effective instead of holding the companies harmless for the side effects. At its best, vaccinations can be a good way to rid our population of many dangerous diseases.

At worst, however, vaccination is a way to introduce diseases. You put mercury and formaldehyde in a shot, that can cause issues down the road. You put stuff in a shot that creates an even worse disease than the one it is supposed to immunize against, you create big pandemics where a nuisance would have been there instead. And, is there something we could do, naturally, that would work instead of (or in addition to) a shot that would make it unnecessary or work better? Like vitamin D and K? Boron? Magnesium? Selenium? Taking the fluoride out of water and the high fructose corn syrup and MSG and aspartame out of the food?

And, when companies put out bad vaccinations, they need to be held to account. These do more than freeze up your app or sputter and stop working when they go bad. They make people sicker than the disease they would have prevented. And, for this, the companies need to be held to account so they will not keep putting out bad products. And companies that put out excellent products should be rewarded for doing so, not suppressed. Then, vaccinations would be more effective and safer, and they would work better when combined with dietary supplements.
