    GDay.

Got a couple of problems at work at the moment and Im not quite sure where to step. Basically, I run the state branch office in a service and spare parts organization. Being experienced in spares Ive been in charge of the spare parts division all along, but the other guy is the formal state manager of the whole thing. Anyway, hes resigned and given 30 days notice. The organization headquaters is sniffing around me and has asked me to run the show. The word "manager" hasnt been mentioned, because they know I wouldnt accept the title, and all the unpaid hours that accompany it.

Being as I just KNOW that this is going to increase my work load (even though they assure me it wont) should I insist on an immediate pay rise? before the guy leaves?

Im a little confused at the moment. I dont want to lose my job, which Im fond of.This could easily happen if they decide to centralize everything (including parts) at the headquarters location.

Do I go for the whole lot? Try to do my best? Run home crying to my mama?

    Advice please.

I've just taken on a more technical role for no more money, but career wise, it's a good move. But I would advise you that time = money. If they assure you there is no extra workload, at least get them to agree that if it turns out there is more work, you will be paid for it. They cannot say no to you because if they did they might aswell admit there is an increased work load.

I'm sure Refiners Fire, you'll get alot of advice! My advice would be to hold off alittle bit and not do anything at the moment. Just see how it goes after he's gone and when it's obvious that your work load has increased, then I would probably talk about a pay raise. Good luck buddy and let us know what'cha do!

    Just my 2 cents.

Thanks Bal and Tink: perhaps I need to start listing the extra duties that are going to pile on me. Its already starting, and the boss isnt even gone yet. They put an office manager in there 3 months ago. He lasted 5 weeks. I dont want to wind up on the block too. Anyway, Ive compiled a list of achievements Ive made over the year. New procedures initiated by me.

Why cant things just stay the same? sigh. Things always change, I know, but I was just getting comfy.

    rf,

I don't know what the employment situation is down there, so I can't give much of an opinion. This is what I have.

You are being v. smart by compiling a list of yr achievements and job tasks. Be ready to show them how valuable you are. If they want you to manage, would you be able to squeeze a contract out of them? This may be the way to go. OTOH, I understand your reluctance. Managing not only means more time (usually unpaid) but more headaches. Managers are also more vulnerable to being scapegoats, too, so you are right to be cautious.

I hope they realize the value of a good employee who truly enjoys his work and puts his heart into his job.

Let us know how it's going!!!

    Thanks Talesin, and all.

Certainly, in management you can find yourself "out" for no good reason other than politics. The last place I was at doing all the purchasing for the plant, the CEO changed and, over 12 months, everyone in authority beneath the old CEO was eradicated. It was an education. It didnt matter how good they were, or how hopeless at their job. They went out the door anyway, starting at the top down. It was just a systematic eradication. So I know what you mean. Yeah, Im reluctant to take the position on, because the guy who just resigned was working 60 hours a week and getting crisis service phone calls at 11pm on Saturday night. His marriage practically fell apart.

Course, the guy was getting 60K a year. But if your working 60 hours a week for it your not much better off than anyone else are you.

It's always been my expierence that increased responsibility equals increased workload.

I don't know how things are in the work force over there but with some of the positions I've had over here, if you do not ask right away for an increase and show your surperiors confidence in your ability to perform, they will overlook you. Someone else may slide in and take the position if you wait to long.

I wish I could give you some good advice but all I can advise you to do is use your best judgment in your own situation because you know yourself and your company better then us.

    GOOD LUCK!
