“Question: Have the ancient worthies returned?

“Answer: Certainly they have not returned. No one has seen them, and it would be foolish to make such an announcement. It was stated in the ‘Millions’ book that we might reasonably expect them to return shortly after 1925, but this was merely an expressed opinion.”

All those idiot Witnesses rushing ahead saying 1925 is the end...how does the faithful slave put up with such false prophets!!! 😨 Lol. It was only an "expressed opinion" in the Watchtower.

this was merely an expressed opinion

Just how are faithful Christians (JWs) to determine which statements coming forth from the F&DS are "opinions" and which are "a message from God"?

    Doc

(You do know what they say about opinions?)

It was way more than an expressed opinion when a house called Beth Sarim was built in San Diego to welcome king David and other worthies in a climate that resembled the middle east. The hiuse was legally deeded to them...that's more than just an opinion...that's putting your money where your mouth is.

    Whose expressed opinion? Joseph Rutherford's.

Was it expressed as an opinion at the time?

No. It was presented as new light on Scripture.

What would have happened to individuals who questioned this "expressed opinion" at the time?

They would have been labelled troublemakers and roundly condemned by Rutherford and his men. Olin Moyle is a perfect example of what happened to an individual who dared question Rutherford.

The predictions for 1925 were also presented as the "justification" for purchasing a high quality piece of land and a building called "Beth Sarim" where Rutherford saw out his latter years in the lap of luxury.

    Some "expressed opinion", huh?

Just how are faithful Christians (JWs) to determine which statements coming forth from the F&DS are "opinions" and which are "a message from God"?

Oh, nothing could be easier to answer:

It's always a message from God....

...until they do a 180 degree flip flop.

Then, the new position is "a message from God", while the prior position is "merely an expressed opinion."

Then by that rule of thumb, EVERYTHING conveyed by the GB at any one time is merely an "expressed opinion" that should not be taken as fact or as literal?

    Right?

Nobody should base their entire life on the "expressed opinions" from them!

    Right?

But if you don't go along with their "expressed opinions" then you are booted out and separated from your family.

When the JC comes for you for apostasy, just tell them it was merely an expressed opinion.

If you read the Watchtower publications between 1920 and 1924 you will note that it was not a mere expressed opinion. It was a strong campaign to propagate the idea that 1925 would be a God's date:

"Have we more reason, or as much, to believe the kingdom will be established in 1925 than Noah had to believe that there would be a flood? [...]Our thought is, that 1925 is definitely settled by the Scriptures. ....As to Noah, the Christian now has much more upon which to base its faith than Noah had upon which to base his faith in a coming deluge." (Question Box, The Watch Tower, April 1, 1923, p. 106)
