  It was way more than an expressed opinion when a house called Beth Sarim was built in San Diego to welcome king David and other worthies in a climate that resembled the middle east. The hiuse was legally deeded to them...that's more than just an opinion...that's putting your money where your mouth is.

  No. It was presented as new light on Scripture.

  What would have happened to individuals who questioned this "expressed opinion" at the time?

  They would have been labelled troublemakers and roundly condemned by Rutherford and his men. Olin Moyle is a perfect example of what happened to an individual who dared question Rutherford.

  The predictions for 1925 were also presented as the "justification" for purchasing a high quality piece of land and a building called "Beth Sarim" where Rutherford saw out his latter years in the lap of luxury.

  Some "expressed opinion", huh?

  Oh, nothing could be easier to answer:
  

  It's always a message from God....

  ...until they do a 180 degree flip flop.

  Then, the new position is "a message from God", while the prior position is "merely an expressed opinion."

  If you read the Watchtower publications between 1920 and 1924 you will note that it was not a mere expressed opinion. It was a strong campaign to propagate the idea that 1925 would be a God's date:

  "Have we more reason, or as much, to believe the kingdom will be established in 1925 than Noah had to believe that there would be a flood? [...]Our thought is, that 1925 is definitely settled by the Scriptures. ....As to Noah, the Christian now has much more upon which to base its faith than Noah had upon which to base his faith in a coming deluge." (Question Box, The Watch Tower, April 1, 1923, p. 106)
