though it may not be 'morally right', I'm sure not going to miss that pederast. Let em fry. Nothing is too harsh for abusers.

I reserve my compassion for the victims of the now dead perv. You won't catch me shedding a tear for him. I do though now have to re-evaluate my opinion concerning the death penalty. Perhaps mindless murderers are of some constructive ues.

While I agree with Simon that the death penalty is misused and a frightening power that I would prefer the government not to have - if you are a convicted child molester, you will have a horrible time in prison. It's a law of nature. Where can we find people with nothing to lose that will carry out vigilante justice? In prison...

I'm not going to waste my time over this. In the end, that priest suffered the same powerlessness and lack of support that he inflicted on everyone else. God's will be done.

The victims of John Goeghan will continue to suffer in silence for years, however he got off easy. Perhaps if Cardinal Law had done something about Goeghan previously, he may still be alive today and there wouldn't be as many victims. But the cardinal was only doing what he was told to do, shuffle these pervs. around. After all the Catholic Church has shuffled him off to Maryland to avoid the heat in Boston. If I was Porter or Shanley, I'd be $hitting in my pants now

Simon & Englishman-- I agree that the death penalty should be abolished. Even if you choose not to consider the moral aspect, the sytem itself is faulty and discriminates against minorities. Moreover, it is estimated that 1-2% of those being executed are in fact INNOCENT!

For revenge, justice and law MURDER is good.

Hamas, I have to to disagree with your opinion. A society is judged, not by how we treat the best and brightest among us, but how we treat the least and/or worst among us. Revenge only creates a culture of hate.

... the Devil makes everyone on earth sinfull and all we have to do is accept Jesus and we are forgiven and are cured

Undecided -- Surely you jest..??? But I get your point... the JWs & Catholics have used this ancient figment of some zealot's imagination to control the unthinking flock for hundreds of years. Scares the hell out of 'em, and keeps them coming back for more.

I have no pity that the man went and got hisself choked to death.

At the same time, he got the easy way out. I think it would have been good for him to live for the next 20 years with the knowledge of the pain he's caused. And from what I hear, jail ain't all that fun.

I have doubts about the efficacy of the death penalty.

Then again, I think there comes a time to kill and the State does civilized society a service by exterminating pests -- like rabid dogs and pedophiles.

But the State has made mistakes, and the death of one innocent person is one too many.

Although if I have anything to do with it, I know EXACTLY what will happen to any molester of one of my loved ones.

But vigilantism is wrong, wrong, wrong.

    Then again...

what about the victims that have yet to come to grips with it? One woman who sued claims she feels responsible now for his death....

my husband knew this priest and has been working on issues for years. this will be a set back for him. how many others?

the criminal priest's death was premature.

While as an individual I strive to be non-judgmental, and yes that includes every person and every action that people commit, I recognize the right of individuals to protect themselves and their families, and the right of society that extends beyond the family to protect itself. While I regret that the only solution to some problems still seems to lie in violence, I am not motivated by a sense that vengeance is in any way appropriate. I find it disturbing that so many people can be aroused to such anger and hate. Those of you who are so glad that this man died, and perhaps take pleasure in picturing and even vicariously participating in his murder, if your child did something completely unacceptable, would you punish him or her with the same kind of anger? If that idea seems repulsive to you, as I hope it does, recall that each of us is someone's child; most religions consider us all children of the Divine.

Maybe the death penalty is the best that society can do to mitigate some types of crimes, but I would ike to think that the human race is in the process of evolving beyond that; or that at east we have that potential.
