    I read this news article

    https://fox6now.com/2019/12/02/city-ordinance-bans-snowballs-in-wausau-in-the-interest-of-public-safety/

    and had two takeaways.

The first one is the ordinance applies only to public property. Banning activity on public property isn't all that rare. Drinking alcohol, smoking, noise, etc, are banned or restricted in communities all over the country on public property. If I read the article correctly, if you want to have a snowball fight in your own backyard, have at it.

The second takeaway has to do with enforcement. The police noted that not one citation has been issued. That's the problem I have with ordinances like this one. What's the point if it is not going to be applied fairly and equally? It's just stupid, feel good politics. Kind of like plastic bag bans or fees for their use (recently passed in my town). Doing "something" about plastic bags really isn't going to impact the total use of plastic, but by Gawd, it did raise awareness for about 5 minutes.

Well at least the town allows you to throw a snowball on your property. Now, it all seems so reasonable.🤥

Putting a rock in a snowball is not the same as throwing a snowball.

    Min ...

I know this sounds crazy to us who have thrown snowballs when kids, but a snowball is not a snowball when it is wet, rocks or not.

Get a nice wet watery snowball in your gloves, squeeze is so tight until the water starts dripping out, and you basically have a rock in your hand (come on man, we both did this as kids.. lol).

You could put out someone's eye, break a car window, let alone someone's head.

The danger is not from the nice white powdery stuff but rather when it begins to melt.

When I was a kid, we would ride everywhere on our bikes and not know what a helmet was. A helmet? Now, if you let your kid ride without a helmet it is considered child abuse.

Min, just the way times change.

Physical hurts, unless serious, usually heal with little or no long lasting effects. Emotional wounds last forever. I think we need laws against ever raising our voices, even when angry. And of course we must ban ever giving a "dirty look" at anyone, as it may hurt their feelings. The more laws we can make dictating how people must act so we never get hurt in any manner is a wonderful idea. (End sarcasm)

Really I have had a belly full of the nanny state idiots that want to micro-manage every last detail of what should be our private lives. Too damned much like WT for my taste.

Your comment really made me think about who is ultimately responsible for the nanny state as your describe it. So as not to hijack this thread, I will start a new one.

But who are the nanny state idiots as you describe them? Are they you and I? Are they the insurance companies that pay out huge sums of money when someone slips and falls? Is it the legal system that allows for very high punitive damages in negligence cases?

I will start a new thread shortly.

Rub, it’s not about changing times. It’s illegal to playfully throw a snowball in most of the town. That’s crazy!

People have to stop trying to legislate every activity because it could hurt someone. People sometimes get hurt playing a sport, so let’s ban the sport altogether. BS
