Hager's track record of using religious beliefs to guide his
medical decision-making makes him a dangerous and inappropriate candidate to serve as chair of this committee. Critical drug public policy and research must not be held hostage by antiabortion politics.

That's just the oddest thing to say.................

ie: jail riots. It doesn't do the rioters a whole lot of good to take other prisoners hostage. Rioters take guards, etc., as hostages - because the other side wants their own people back.

In view of this strategy..........why would ANTI-abortion politics take hostage critical drug public policy and research by having Dr. Hager in this committee?

In today's America, a totally qualified man is labeled a "dangerous and inappropriate candidate" because he is opposed to murdering unborn babies. Disgraceful. -Borgfree

The ones who oppose him might not even agree with abortion - but they DO agree that unmarried women should have the right to contraceptives, amongst other things. Good Lord - that argument died in the late 60's.

When a person makes moral judgments of others based on their conservative interpretation of the Bible or any other holy book you have a "dangerous and inappropriate candidate".

I can understand why you think that way. I do think, however, that our country has a history of very religious men being in office. Some say that our nation has never been a Christian nation, but I think history shows that it has been, from the start. My point is, that although there were always men of faith and especially Christian men in office, our country has done pretty good over the years.

I personally would prefer, anytime, a Christian in office rather than a Godless man.

To be honest I do not know the man or his qualifications, but I do know something about the man who appointed him. I like George Bush, I trust his decisions and appointments. I remember a former President who appointed some of the most untrustworthy people you could imagine.

Great posts, everyone!! Such an intelligent bunch discussing things respectfully! I'd hate to have to see women lose ground on important issues such as birth control, etc.

I'm not a supporter of abortion, but believe it's not the government's business to make such rulings. Especially about the "morning-after" pill, etc. That is unless the fundamentalists care so much about the children that they'll take them and raise them. It seems they let that fall flat. But then again, it's not the government's realm to decide, especially on a religious basis.

This may be a country composed predominantly of people of the Christian faith, but that does not mean the laws of the land should be based on that faith. Good grief! Women would be set back, gays would lose ground, and, and, . .. well, you get the drift. I'm at work and gotta run.

I don't think I would disagree with you on that, but the socialist/liberal side has changed laws over the years that were in effect for a very long time, I do not necessarily agree with their methods either.

That is unless the fundamentalists care so much about the children that they'll take them and raise them.

I think we have all been doing that for many years now. Irresponsible people keep having babies and by our tax dollars we pay for them, from the cradle to the grave. The answer is to educate and/or force the ones who have the children to pay the cost for them. I do not believe they should have the option to get pregnant, whenever they please, and then use abortion as a birth control method. I think that is murder, however you look at it.

Why should a persons religious beliefs be any less important than an atheists, or any other persons beliefs? I think Christian standards are just as valid as anyone else's.

Now that Christian beliefs are considered taboo in this country, are we so much better off than we were 50 years ago, when Christian standards were the rule?

What's so bad about that? What standards should be used in making laws? None? I think that is where we are heading.

Thanks for your reply Borgfree. I won't go into it point-by-point because it may be pointless (pun intended!), but basically the government should be secular and the laws should be made for the good of the most people it can be. Why does religion have to enter into it? Indeed, the famous separation of church and state precludes it. People can have common sense outside of religion. It also has nothing to do with atheism. It's merely two separate orbits: secular and religious. People have agreed for a long time that they should be separate too.

In my hurry I used a poor choice of words. I should have said believers as apposed to non-believers, but there are some believers who would change this country into a dictatorship, so I would not include all religions. I do not believe Bush has, or would ever have, any intentions of turning this country into a theocracy.

I have no idea where you would get such an opinion. I have seen only good from the current President, certainly nothing like the last one.

Why does non of this surprise me? I used to like Bush, but lately I am becoming sorry that I voted for him. He seems bent on dragging the country backwards.
