We have this thing in the US called the Electoral College. It dates back
to the time when only land-owners could vote and giving sparsely
populated States more rights.
You may enjoy reading exactly why we have the electoral college (actually brilliant) in the book Summer of 1787

Folks who rail against the electoral college often don't seem to understand it much deeper than a bumper sticker or sound bite they heard on MSNBC.
It is the height of simplistic thinking to think a straight "one person, one vote" approach is good at the national level. It was employed to address the same (but not identical) issues, then and now.
Besides, if the popular vote was all that was necessary we'd have Hillary Clinton in the White House. Certainly you wouldn't want that.....no matter how much you hate The Orange One.
