I`d be in favour of banning Russian sponsored sports of every description .However if a Russian competed in a sport for some other nation I wouldn`t have a problem with it .

Do they not already compete, not for Russia, but under the auspices of the local olympic committee?
if they can avoid the drug tests?
Yes Simon - your OP is spot on.
Part of living in the real world is dealing with people you don't necessarily like.
Punishing Russian people for the things Putin is doing is moronic.
Russian athletes are innocent of what is going on in Ukraine in that they're not responsible for it.
And re this current situation in Ukraine, everybody is going to have to get round a table and start peace talks and compromises - with Russia included at the table (i.e. Russia can't be 'cancelled' from such proceedings).
Don't get me wrong, Putin is not a nice human being. But he's not going anywhere and neither are his yes-men colleagues who are also from the Soviet era.
It is sad. The Russian military action in Ukraine is not supported by many Russians. This is mostly, if not all, Putin.
In addition, Russian is not the U.S. or the U.K. or the E.U. Russian is an autocratic nation. Putin is the dictator that runs the country. Russian nationals can protest, but the risk imprisonment or worse. It is hard for Russian citizens to conduct an armed revolt as firearms are strictly regulated and any type of firearm that might be effective in battle is prohibited. Even possessing 1 bullet for a rifle sends you to prison.
If you really had any principles you would object to those things.
Agreed. As a comment said on another site, "These virtue signalling nitwits are buying expensive bottles of Russian vodka just so they can pour it out for the news cameras. They are protesting against Russia in meaningless ways, all the while wearing their over-priced sneakers made in China, taking "selfies" and texting each other on their Chinese made 'smart' phones, and then going to Walmart to buy cheap Chinese made merchandise. If they really were serious about protesting the bad that Russia has done and is doing they would take the same stand against China whose government has engaged in Uyghur genocide, and severe repression of it's citizens rights. Until that happens they and those who support them are nothing other than virtue signalling hypocrites!"
I'm fascinated at the extent of the pressure being put on both Putin and Russia. It seems unprecedented, and it could work far better than hoped. But it's also very scary. I'm reminded of Pastor Niemoller's words:
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
An important message here is that, whenever oppressors want to introduce rules or laws or policies that suppress freedom and harm the innocent, first they seek to apply them to those who are easy to vilify. Once the law or rule is in place, it can now be used against anyone else. What is the old saying? The price of freedom is eternal vigilance. Anytime we take the easy way out, we open the door to the worst kinds of opportunists.
The ability of 'the world' to 'cancel' a nation and subject its citizens to suffering and deprivation sounds like war by a different name. I'm interested in seeing how this goes, but also very worried.
Until that happens they and those who support them are nothing other than virtue signalling hypocrites!"
It's only done to make THEMSELVES look and feel better. All they are saying and doing is "Hey look at meeeeeee, see how much I care? I'm so much better than you."
Hypocrites is correct!!
Don't forget, they can do this to anyone. If they can do it to one political side in Canada, and all the people in Russia, they can do it to you.
Also, do they think this hurts Putin? It reinforces the view that the world is against Russia and bolsters his support if anything. Anyone remember history at all, and the world being against Germany after WWI? That worked out well ... people never become more determined, more fanatical, and fight back harder, right?
People need to wise the fuck up and stop being led by the politicians and the media who walk us into pointless conflicts for ratings and distraction purposes. The Russian people are not our enemy, and we should stop treating them like they are.
SOTU shortened version-
Russia bad! Ukraine good! Oh, you thought I said defund the Police…?!!!? Inflation, Cornpop, America!!
