...of Mankind out of Armageddon" (1967) Remember that booklet?

On the back page, a plug for the Life Everlasting book (yeah, the one that didn't really say anything about 1975) (bold added):

What must you do to gain everlasting life? Jesus Christ said that taking in right knowledge "means everlasting life." (John 17:3) And right knowledge is what this 416-page book contains. In it you can learn how mankind came into enslavement to sin and death, how and when liberation is to come, and what life will then be like. Its chart of chronology reveals that few years remain for this present wicked system of things...for only 50 cents.

    Caveat emptor.

Two other references to that chart:

But, without a doubt, nothing has created more interest in this textbook than the first chapter with its chart and fine information regarding the 7,000 years of God’s rest day. The observation that 1975 may well mark the beginning of mankind’s great Jubilee has intrigued many.

It did not take the brothers very long to find the chart beginning on page 31, showing that 6,000 years of man’s existence end in 1975. Discussion of 1975 overshadowed about everything else. "The new book compels us to realize that Armageddon is, in fact, very close indeed," said a conventioner. Surely it was one of the outstanding blessings to be carried home!

In 1975 there were only about 2 million of us to remember what it was like before, during, and after that debacle. Since then there've been about 7 million baptized, who for the most part don't have the slightest clue about how 1975 was hyped, even in writing. I shake my head when I think back over the last 10 years and recall so many JWs saying things like "Well, it really wasn't a big deal, ya know."

Yep... I hate it when people say the 1975 fiasco never happened! If that were the case, then why would the WTS put this lame apology in the 1980 yearbook?

The brothers also appreciated the candor of this same talk, which acknowledged the Society’s responsibility for some of the disappointment a number felt regarding 1975.

Good point Craig....and right there is the proof. "Discussion of 1975 overshadowed about everything else". So it was no big deal? They should tell that to the bros and sis's who sold their homes and so forth to pioneer, and who were commended for it rather than given a balanced warning.

Watson, and (as you well know) they continue to dismiss the impact of 1975.

    *** g95 6/22 p. 9 Can You Trust God’s Promises? ***

Bible Students, known since 1931 as Jehovah’s Witnesses, also expected that the year 1925 would see the fulfillment of marvelous Bible prophecies. They surmised that at that time the earthly resurrection would begin, bringing back faithful men of old, such as Abraham, David, and Daniel. More recently, many Witnesses conjectured that events associated with the beginning of Christ’s Millennial Reign might start to take place in 1975. Their anticipation was based on the understanding that the seventh millennium of human history would begin then.

These erroneous views did not mean that God’s promises were wrong, that he had made a mistake. By no means! The mistakes or misconceptions, as in the case of first-century Christians, were due to a failure to heed Jesus’ caution, ‘You do not know the time.’ The wrong conclusions were due, not to malice or to unfaithfulness to Christ, but to a fervent desire to realize the fulfillment of God’s promises in their own time.

Consequently, A. H. Macmillan explained later: "I learned that we should admit our mistakes and continue searching God’s Word for more enlightenment. No matter what adjustments we would have to make from time to time in our views, that would not change the gracious provision of the ransom and God’s promise of eternal life."

Indeed, God’s promises can be trusted! It is humans who are prone to error. Therefore, true Christians will maintain a waiting attitude in obedience to Jesus’ command. They will keep awake and ready for Christ’s inevitable coming as God’s Executioner. They will not allow false predictions to dull their senses and cause them to ignore the true warning of the world’s end.

And just who was it that made those predictions? Oh yeah, I remember now...it was a bunch of newly-appointed ministerial servants.

Again, in 1975, there was disappointment when expectations regarding the start of the Millennium failed to materialize. As a result, some withdrew from the organization. Others, because they sought to subvert the faith of associates, were disfellowshipped. No doubt, disappointment over the date was a factor, but in some instances the roots went deeper. Some individuals also argued against the need to participate in the house-to-house ministry. Certain ones did not simply choose to go their own way; they became aggressive in opposing the organization with which they had been associated, and they made use of the public press and television to air their views. Nevertheless, the number who defected was relatively small.

Uh-huh...try like about 500,000 between 1975 and 1980...only 25%, hardly noticeable at all.

"Say, What Does This 1975 Mean?"

The Witnesses had long shared the belief that the Thousand Year Reign of Christ would follow after 6,000 years of human history. But when would 6,000 years of human existence end? The book Life Everlasting—In Freedom of the Sons of God, released at a series of district conventions held in 1966, pointed to 1975. Right at the convention, as the brothers examined the contents, the new book triggered much discussion about 1975.

At the convention held in Baltimore, Maryland, F. W. Franz gave the concluding talk. He began by saying: "Just before I got on the platform a young man came to me and said, ‘Say, what does this 1975 mean?’" Brother Franz then referred to the many questions that had arisen as to whether the material in the new book meant that by 1975 Armageddon would be finished, and Satan would be bound. He stated, in essence: ‘It could. But we are not saying. All things are possible with God. But we are not saying. And don’t any of you be specific in saying anything that is going to happen between now and 1975. But the big point of it all is this, dear friends: Time is short. Time is running out, no question about that.’

In the years following 1966, many of Jehovah’s Witnesses acted in harmony with the spirit of that counsel. However, other statements were published on this subject, and some were likely more definite than advisable. This was acknowledged in The Watchtower of March 15, 1980 (page 17). But Jehovah’s Witnesses were also cautioned to concentrate mainly on doing Jehovah’s will and not to be swept up by dates and expectations of an early salvation.

Yeah, there was a whole one, count'em, one article that advised caution:

Why Are You Looking Forward to 1975?

Having lived through those years and personally felt the upheaval and disappointment in my life because of the false hopes the WTS very deliberately promoted...well, now to see them still continue to dodge responsibility and misrepresent what they did...grrrrr.

rocketman, like you said...tell that schpiel to the people that went through it!

The WTS has, for at least 85 years, been a gigantic lying machine. And the more I learn about that history (now, finally, with opened eyes), the more I'm convinced that the leadership of that organization is rotten right to the core.

1975 sure was real to me. And to think I still showed them loyalty until 1999.
The last meeting I went to was the one where the "Generation" issue was discussed. 1999. That
was too much. Since then I found out how much they've been lying.
In the Bible it states that when a prophet prophesizes and it comes true he's a prophet from God.
When it doesn't come true he's a false prophet. Just one false prophesy is enough.
How many false prophesies have the WT uttered?
Dozens! How many came true? None!

    So what's your conclusion?

    Is your life miserable?

    Are you scared?

Do you think the whole world sucks?

There's a nifty little chronology in this booklet that proves that God will soon kill most everyone and the few people that are left will laud you for the very wise person that you know that you are, but no one ever gave you credit for.

All this for only 50 cents? Sounds like a steal.

The WTBTS is a good snake oil sales enterprise.
