I debated about posting this, because it's embarrassing but I decided to do it just in case anyone else falls for this one.

I have 3 websites where I market nutritional supplements, and I get thousands of dollars in orders each month. At the end of July, I got a very large order ($10,500) for one of the products. I filled the order using the credit card numbers provided by the customer. She requested I ship the boxes (3 very large ones) to Nigeria to a hospital there, and gave me a Visa number to use for FedEx. My commission on that order was over $2000. I was licking my chops!!!!!!!!!

About a week later, I got a similar order, from another person, and filled it too and shipped it. Then he ordered more, totally about $20,000. I shipped part of that order 2 weeks ago.

A few days later I got another large order from another person, also wanting boxes shipped to a hospital in Nigeria. I placed that one too. The Visa numbers all cleared when entered.

Then another large order came in. My company was calling me by now, congratulating me on a great month. I was so thrilled. The orders totaled over $60,000 and my commissions were well over $10,000. I was spending that money in my head like mad.

Then the floor dropped out from under me. I know about all the Nigeria scams, and started getting nervous about how easy this was. So I called Visa and got the bank number for the cards used for the second order. The first thing the person on the line told me was that I had reached a fraud line. She gave me a phone number to fax in all the numbers I had used. You guessed it.............ALL of the numbers were fraudulent............either stolen or just made up. They told me when they called me, that there are entire websites where people buy the lists of fraudulent credit cards, and they told me not to worry

About this time, my supplier called me to tell me the first order was fraudulent, and I told them what I had learned too and we started working on fixing this problem. The last few orders were cancelled of course, and I have six boxes in my garage now, waiting to be picked up and returned.

I am not liable for any of it, and my company is out one shipment. The second order is in Nigeria now, but Fed Ex is intercepting it and possible arresting the person who will pick it up. I was told to call the Secret Service to report it and I did, but was really surprised by their attitude. It's not a big prirority, but they admitted it is a big problem. They told me to relax because I was not in trouble and wouldn't have to pay anything. Whew!

My company is only out about $1000 due to mark up. The price they sell at is inflated for profit, but we all feel very foolish. They assured me I am not liable and they accepted the Visa numbers, so they are the ones who are out anything.

Another lesson learned. Very embarrassing, but I feel better today.

I don't see why you should be embarassed Mulan. How would you know? You sent the credit card numbers through, so I don't see where you should be feeling anything other than relieved and annoyed at the same time.

That's good to know by the way, about the fraudulent credit card numbers. I didn't know that. Is there any way to tell if a number is fraudulent? Are all the numbers stolen?

I'm glad it worked out all right.

Mulan I understand it might be embarrassing but thanks for posting this. There are far too many of these scams out there.

Glad the ax won't fall on you

Wow--the fact that those fraudulent numbers all cleared is the scariest part! Why bother have an authentification system?

That is horrible. People have some nerve.

Sorry you had to go through that - but I would not be embarrassed at all - you did nothing wrong. I can't imagine any other way you could have done this differently since you got tha auth on the transactions etc.

Don't let it get you down... just keep thinking about what those guys face if the Nigerian justice system gets a hold of them!

I've had something similar happen to me... My business (in the US) and another in Mexico were working together selling products and services for the Y2K thing. Other third party companies (in the UK) knew we were working together, so when the company in Mexico made a large order for some products (about 9000 pounds sterling worth), they shipped it thinking I was aware of it. Then one day I got a phone call asking for payment...

The company in the UK told me not to worry about it because I did not make the order... and they knew who received the package. Anyway, it was their fault for accepting an order from someone other than me (the only person authorized in my contract with them). Even still, sometimes I worry about the idea of flying through Europe... Will I get off the plane only to be met by some burly Bobbies?

That is what has me mystified. They were fraudulent. How could they clear? Only one was a stolen number and they said the customer hadn't used the account in over a year.

    Mulan,

I have a small home side business where I accept credit cards. Sometimes cards will "pass" at the time the order is placed. The order may turn out to be fraudulent. There's always a small time window where a stolen number is used, the person/bank finds out, and the number is marked as stolen.

Fortunately in my case I don't really ship out any products. The times I have a fraudulent charge the bank just reverses the payment made to me.

What helps is the address verification feature (but this doesn't work for foreign orders). Also, a lot of web sites are now requiring the 3 or 4 digit verification number. That is supposed to help prevent fraud.

Sorry to hear about your experience!

That 4 digit verification number in the UK is soon not going to be prinited on the back of the card but sent to you as a PIN number. You will also be able to punch it in at the Point Of Sale. The hardware is appearing now all across the country.

I've heard about those numbers... I read an article where they are doing testing to see if the public would accept that over signatures. So far the public overwhelmingly likes it, including me.
