Depp Says Comments Were Not Anti-U.S.

    Sep 5, 10:38 AM (ET)

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Johnny Depp said he intended no "anti-American sentiment" in comparing the nation to a dumb puppy and blamed news reports for misrepresenting his opinions.

Depp, star of the summer hit movie "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," apologized in a statement to those "who were offended, affected or hurt by this insanely twisted deformation of my words and intent." Stern, the German magazine that interviewed the actor, stood by its story.

Depp was quoted as saying that "America is dumb, is something like a dumb puppy that has big teeth - that can bite and hurt you, aggressive."

In a statement Thursday, the 40-year-old actor complained that "the inaccurate and out of context misquote" was "virulently spreading in the news."

"Taken in context, what I was saying was that, compared to Europe, America is a very young country and we are still growing as a nation. It is a shame that the metaphor I used was taken so radically out of context and slung about irresponsibly by the news media," Depp said.

"There was no anti-American sentiment. In fact, it was just the opposite," he said. "I am an American. I love my country and have great hopes for it. It is for this reason that I speak candidly and sometimes critically about it. I have benefited greatly from the freedom that exists in my country and for this I am eternally grateful."

Stern magazine news editor Hans-Peter Junker said Friday that Depp's quotes were "not taken out of context."

"Stern regrets that Johnny Depp is being criticized for his outspoken remarks in his homeland," Junker said. "Stern stands by its account."

Depp spends much of his time in the south of France with his companion, Vanessa Paradis, and their two children. According to the Stern article, Depp said he couldn't see himself paying more than short visits to his Los Angeles residence in the present political climate.

Anyone with a brain can figure out the metaphor of a dumb but agressively dangerous puppy is extremely unflattering. But I suppose JD thinks Americans are so dumb, we'll buy his "immature, developing" BS...

This just proves that not only does he like to slam the country that he supposedly loves so much, he's a coward when he's called on it. Could compromise big bucks and the box office. Pitiful.

Yeah, it couldn't possibly be an unscrupulous journalist misquoting him or quoting him out of context. Visit Smiley Central!

Guess anything's possible, lol. But, as the German magazine clearly stands by the story and says that nothing was taken out of context, and because nothing in the article, from the "dumb puppy" comment to his only wanting to expose his children to the US for short bits of time, don't sound like there is much room for taking his comments "out of context."

What in the article and in his comments lead you to think he was portraying the US in a positive, flattering light, that would in fact, make it seem that the interviewer was "grossly misrepresenting" him?

It only shows ONE thing. How easily swayed are the opinions of superstars when faced with the backlash of the consumer republic.

WHY do major news outlets interview these freaks? If they want to make a case, cool. Then MAKE it, but don't come crying back when your ratings are down. What possible political point could these freaks make? They live in a world of make believe, and they want everyone to think that their possible opinions are worth dust. give it up..

I don't really think he was misquoted at all. From what I recall of Depp's Letterman appearance he spoke along the same basic lines.

I believe it very well could have been out of context. Which does make some changes. His career will be fine although I'm sure his business manager is freaking right about now.

Simon it appears the original thread is currently being used to bash Ronald Reagan and bears little resemblelance to it's original point.
