    That's' the headline of an article in the Sydney Morning Herald. My JW family are sharing it with glee on Facebook right now. Here's the link;

    I haven't read the article yet but I wonder if the extra "consideration" that JWs may require may play a factor. They may put more effort into selecting a surgeon as well as the surgeon being more careful because of the increased risk or more limited medical options.

    Funny too that they would use medical outcome to justify religious choice. If it's for religious doctrine then what does the outcome matter? They used to revel in the sacrifice and people risking their lives because of their faith ... if the stats change do they then label it a blessing from Jehovah instead?

    Does the article have a fine print ******the jehovah's witnesses who were able to survive without blood or did not really need it****** I'm sure the ones where it's blood or death didn't fare better.

    Interesting ... so it all seems to be about better preparation and a more holistic approach to reduce the increased risk of not being able to accept blood and this preparation ends up creating a better outcome.

    Obviously if they did this for all patients (which they should) then it would increase the benefits for them as well and then JWs would have a worse outcome (because some would die because of refusing blood).

    No amount of cell salvage will help in the event of catastrophic blood loss as at a roadside traffic accident nor will it help Jehovah's Witnesses recovering from cancer treatment who need platelets.

    It's also not much use in most of the developing world which doesn't have access to the facilities available to a well funded and modern New York hospital.

    And it certainly won't help those poor souls who've already paid with their lives.

    The brothers who go around for the liaison committee here also made millions out of this setup.  It was in our news paper here in Perth. Two weekend articles that made me very angry at the way they could influence, not just other JWs, but the general public as well.

    And of course that report does not represent the amount of deaths that occur among jehovah`s  witnesses for refusing blood transfusions .

    The surgeon may also be more careful because of the increased risk or more limited medical options.

    And of course the threat of being sued by the next of kin when a patient dies .

    umbertoecho, could you expand on the Perth HLC story please? Do you have links to the newspaper articles you referred to?

    Many thanks
