Hello folks, It's been awhile since I have posted, hope everyone is doing well! I have a question, though, If the Society is not paying the Governing body, or other "big wigs" in NY large salaries, what would be the motivating factor for the society to continue to exist? I am not saying that money is everything, but if none of the money is going into pockets, then the society must really feel that they are God's chosen channel, or something to that effect. This has really been puzzling me, because their has to be some motivating factor for it to keep going, even in the face of all the negative publicity the JWs have been receiving lately. So, can someone fill in the blanks for me? Hope this is not a stupid question.

    Thanks,

    Vita

There are no stupid questions here in Oregon, only stupid people. JK.

There may not be huge salaries, but ther are perks and such that the old duffers couldn't earn in the real world. (Akroyd to Murray, Ghostbusters: "You've never been in the private sector, Veenkman! I have! They expect results!" )

Additionally, they get the huge ego boost of being the HNIC's for the whole Society. Once you convince yourself that God talks to you, even if it's just through a bowl of Alpha-Bits, you can convince yourself of anything.

Question: What keeps the Watchtower Society going?

    Easy, the wholy spear-it

Actually, I've concluded that the GB and other faithful R&F are delusional and fully believe all of the shat printed in the WT.

And that's the scary part. They REALLY believe that they are jehovers reps on earth.

    Scary, but simple

For some people, power is even a bigger attraction than money. Look at all the abusive elders in the congregations, who are not paid, but would die (or kill) before they'd give up their positions. It's the power over other people's lives that holds them.

Good answers here, Phant....the perks, not havin' ta deal with the pressures and responsibilities of the real world (only hafta imagine that yer "special" and keep yer facade intact publicly) and Power (over others, natcherly)...

I think that Dave mentioned some of those perks in his 4 Part Tour thread....flying first class, taking world "tours", first class hotel accommodations, nice apartment, god-like position....and I personally have seen those who are of the heirarchy dressed in designer clothes, their excuse being the WT-babble about Jesus having been clothed in fine outer garments (IF so, they were given to him) and they were "following in his..." well...you know the drill......of course, to me personally, it wouldn't be worth having to eat the shit dished out up there at Brothel....in more ways than one... :)

What makes a loving son strap dynamite to his body wrapped with nails then blow himself up killing women and children while at the sametime making his mother proud that he died for such a noble cause?

The belief that you are right enables people to do almost anything and hold onto that belief against all opposition, in fact opposition makes you stronger in your stance.

J.F Rutherford believed Russell was greater than Jesus...until it interfered with his new belief.... that he was greater than Jesus. I wish when he stood on that platform in 1935 and said behold the Great Crowd someone would have shouted back ..What the Fk are you talking about, last year we were going to heaven....asshole!

Think of the power...increasing every year...100,000.....500,000....1,000,000...3,000,000.....6,000,000 not to mention all the JW pets...millions of cats and dogs destined to make it through the Great tribulation with thier loyal masters.

Don't have children the end is too close...have a pet instead..Jehover will protect your pet won't he...He protected Balaam's ass....Oops sorry I was having a little fun.

I honestly try to stay serious...just can't help myself.

I've often wondered that same thing myself. I don't know whether or not they really believe what they want everyone else to believe about their beliefs (we need a thesaurus in here! Stat!), but I do think they have a vested interest in not questioning it too much.

I think the motivating factor really, is fear. The GeeBee's have spent the vast majority of their (very long) lives at Bethel. They have to maintain the status quo at all costs because if they don't have the organization, they don't have anything. I think the concept that what they have been working for their whole lives is a lie, is a prospect to frightening to consider. Even more frightening is the idea that they could loose it.

Maybe they don't think it's the truth either, but their place in this world is riding on the fact that they can get lots of other people to believe that it is. Too many people have too much too loose to start rocking the boat now.

I don't see how they could all believe it. The ones at the top can see the whole thing, including all the things we hear about on here that convinces us of its falseness but the average witness knows very little about. If they saw all that and still believed, they must be pretty dumb and pretty dumb people don't normally rise to the top of a huge corporation.

I think its a combination of power, and knowing how much you've given up when you did believe, and do you really want to give up every single thing in your life you've worked so hard to acheive?
