sir82 - "But why the drab clothing?"
The WTS has almost never portrayed loyal, dutiful, obedient JWs as being particularly physically attractive, in facial features or dress. I could probably count on one hand the number of times I saw anyone in a WT publication who I found genuinely good-looking.
Even as a kid, I always interpreted that to mean that "righteous" people were expected to appear bland, dull, and unattractive.
And looking back, that depressed the ever-loving shit out of me.

Individuality is discouraged, it’s often the first step towards the extremely dangerous independent thinking.

I could spot only around 3 to 4 "genuine" smiles among the 12.

What it seems to be saying is this: We'll accept you as long as you fit into our limited color scheme. So, if you don't rock the boat, come on in, climb aboard. There's a reason many of them look rather strange or unattractive: because that's who the Governing Body is trying to appeal to in this, strange and/or unattractive people. And they're promising "happiness" via community as long as you stay in line. It's a pretty explicit promise being made here.
