    I LIKE ALL "teejay's" songs!!!!

    shania's .. "Up"

wow, there are so many. for me, the pixies are the number one essential. sonic youth follows closely. radiohead, osker, pink floyd, gym class heroes, ordinary peoples, the streets ...and of course any of the poppy or new wave eighties stuff is always golden in my book.

    Teejay, I love your list.

Hamas, I totally agree with you about 2Pac, and would add one more "I wonder if heaven's got a ghetto"

Some lesser known artists with thought provoking lyrics:

Arrested Development - Mr. Wendal, Raining Revolution, Everyday People (kind of a redone of the Sly and the family stone song)

Teena Marie - Stop the World, Deja Vu, Too Many Colors

Poison - Something to Believe In (makes me cry, even now)

And some better known, but still wonderful ones:

    Sara McLachlan - Angels

    John Lennon - Imagine

Lee Anne Womack - I Hope You Dance (seriously one of the most meaningful songs I have ever heard)

Goo Goo Dolls - Iris (the lyrics are below)

And I'd give up forever to touch you
Cause I know that you feel me somehow
You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be
And I don't want to go home right now

And all I can taste is this moment
And all I can breathe is your life
Cause sooner or later it's over
I just don't want to miss you tonight

And I don't want the world to see me
    Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything feels like the movies
Yeah you bleed just to know you're alive

And I don't want the world to see me
    Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

    (break and solo)

And I don't want the world to see me
    Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
And I don't want the world to see me
    Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am

    Happyout (who is almost 40)

I turned my 10-year-old nephew on to Jimmy Buffett. I think he's still got my Buffett Greatest Hits CD. He also like Frank Zappa. "Godzilla" by Blue Oyster Cult is an anthem to Josh.

I can't really narrow it down to any specific songs as far as must-listens. If I were to list must-listens for kids today who don't know much past the noise on top-40 radio and MTV, well.......

(in no particular order) Fleetwood Mac, Old Ozzy like Black Sabbath and his stuff from the 80's, early Metallica, Duran Duran, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Joan Jett, The Beatles, Elvis, The Stones, Charlie Daniels, Hank Jr., Credence Clearwater Revival.....

    Mike.

here's one song i wish every exiting dub would listen to...i relate to it for several reasons...

it's by aimee mann, and it's called 'wise up'

    It's not what you thought
    When you first began it
    You got what you want
Now you can hardly stand it though

By now you know it's not
    Going to stop
    It's not going to stop
    It's not going to stop
    'Til you wise up

    You're sure there's a cure
And you have finally found it
    You think one drink
    will shrink you 'til
    you're underground and living down
But it's not going to stop
    It's not going to stop
    It's not going to stop
    'Til you wise up

Prepare a list of what you need
Before you sign away the deed
'Cause it's not going to stop
    It's not going to stop
    It's not going to stop
    'Til you wise up

No it's not going to stop
    'Til you wise up
Now it's not going to stop
    So just give up

2Pac's work is amazing, the guy is a legend. He was a fantastic storyteller; and unlike most wannabee bad boy rappers today he lived the life of one.

No he didn't. He grew up in Marin. Thug life my a$$. Plus one half of his catalogue contradicts the other half. He raps about Ho's on one song and then praises women on another. He's an idiot who was good at marketing himself and rhyming.

(nothing personal Hamas, 2Pac just rubs me the wrong way.)

    Dang, Amac!

Why don't-cha stop beatin' around the bush and tell us what you really think!!

A lot of what he wrote/sang, I admit, was rougher than it needed to be, but the man was gifted, I'm sorry. I listen to some of what he wrote -- like Only God Can Judge Me Now -- and get choked up by his simple though powerful lyrics that just... I hate to say... tells it just like it is.

I agree that he didn't really live the life--he was a wanna be thug--but IMO his heart was in the right place. Now, leave my little brother Pac alone!
