What does Watchtower think of being Medically Assisted in Death (MAiD)?

Vanderhoven7, not that I could find even the most recent publications. Even hospitals regulate how much morphine they give terminal patients, enough to alleviate the pain, but not to kill them. Usually they have a drip machine attached to your vein that regulates how much you can take over a specified period of time. Of course, refusing medication or treatments that don't heal but only alleviate pain are not considered suicide so far by the WTS. I see that the WTS stance on blood transfusion contradicts what they said above in print. But when has the WTS not talked out of both sides of their mouths?

I don't see Christ as suicidal

Vandh: but the sacrificial death , for their folks, like the kamikaze, were not primarily desiring to end their life either, nor am I, not tired of life. -- The Son should have stipulated in the term of service, that he would be allowed to live past Adam's lifespan, <1000 years to prove his credentials as a valid shoe in.

There is a perception here , that care for us well past 90 year olds, eagerness to heal is lagging, many die with diagnosis of terminal illnesses, never discovered before. Final care is limited to starving, an euphoric death.

I have a "do not resuscitate " clause in my living will, (do not believe, like wt teaches, that armageddon will end my life) but am not suicidal.

wt practically teaches that anybody not clicking on JW.org is suicidal.

    Excellent find Blondie.

I wonder if "mercy killing" goes on in our hospitals rather regularly. As the end approaches for the elderly, does ramping up their morphine contribute to a speedy death?

Yes, seen it first hand, happens very often when there is no hope of recovery and family gives consent.

I have struggled with this since I had a neighbor (a liberal Lutheran) who chose MAiD. We visited him days before his departure. We talked gospel with him but were not judgmental about his decision-making.

I don't think MAiD is the unforgivable sin. I think there are justifiable reasons to terminate one's life prematurely although they may be rare. Those jumping from twin-tower windows in NY to avoid the pain of the inescapable is one such example.

I'm reminded of a movie I saw where a group of Americans were being chased by Amazonian tribesmen. Almost all escaped in a small boat to their ship. One was caught on the shore and the chief began slicing every inch of his body while he screamed in pain with every slice. From the ship, a fellow escapee picked up a rifle and shot his suffering friend in the head much to the wrath of the chief. The shooter was later tried for murder. I forgot how the trial ended, but I'm sure everyone watching the episode was relieved by the shooting

"Dying process"? According to WT human death is unnatural.

Good to hear from you Blondie…

Mercy killing a la Dr Kavorkian is not the same as a “ do not resuscitate “ order . The one hastens death to put you out of pain and misery, the other just allows things to take their course rather than artificially keeping you alive.

I guess it was the latter that the WT was talking about rather than hastening things. However, at the end of life it is between you and God, isn’t it. If you were in a desperate situation I don’t think you would stop to ask The Society.

I just can't see the Borg in harmony with MAD because of their principles of 'valuing human life'.

But, then again they adhere to a deadly blood policy. Go figure. What they always preach, you get contradictory views. Weird.

Seeing how they pushed/push the clot shot....you could argue they are in favor of it. ( more in the news lately proving the clot connection)

I know of many suicides among JWs. Officially they are against it but realize that some individuals may be pushed beyond their limit. Medically assisted suicide is more common in hospice situations than most personnel will admit. I don't criticize. When my time comes, I would like for it to be on my own terms - and I trust that the God of comfort understands us well.

Blondie is spot on. If legalized in the US, WTC would prohibit it for members, despite their degree of suffering.
