When I first meet people face-to-face, I'm rather quiet and like to observe and 'get a feel' for everyone else's comfort level. Sometimes, I like to let other people just talk to their heart's content and listen. I like keeping the conversation going with questions.

LOL@Scully! I HAAATE when people do that....you'd have me spillin' my guts about my whole life history in a New York minute, cher!

I am the same guy on and off the internet. No reason to be anything but that.

Online, though, some topics come up that don't normally through regular chatting with someone. But overall, I would say that most people whom I come in contact with, like me.

I don't know... I keep asking myself the same ol questions...

"Who am I?" , "What am I doing here?", "What's the meaning of this?", "Am I boring everyone?", "Why me?", "God, what do I say to that?", "OMG...",

Although I will say that on-line I can smile and clap and cry and yell and get pissed off and slam the keyboard and then think long enough to actually reply (sometimes) without feeling overwhelmed (and nobody knows but me). So, it's safer... yeah, i guess my persona online does differ... I know why but I couldn't begin to tell you how .

I am the exact representation of my very being while online.

I am pretty shy and quiet in real life when I am around people I don't know or I am in a big group. (You all in the back row--stop laughing! It's true!!)

I am also much more of an observer in real life. I love people watching, and just taking it all in.

Since there isn't a whole lot to observe online, I tend to spew more random garbage. You know, anything for a laugh mentality.

Uhhh.. folks, I'll interpret the statement "I'm exactly the same person on or offline" as meaning that you do not try to create a different persona when you're online (like some do).

However, it's been shown that people think differently through text than through speech. The act of typing, of composing your thought, shapes the development of the thought totally differently than if you were speaking one-on-one. Our conversations would be totally different in person - not just because of the sequecning issues, but because our thoughts would progress in different directions. It's like squeezing toothpaste out of the tube - the act of squeezing it forms the structure.

Another thing that changes on the internet is our reactions to other's body language, tone of voice, and volume of voice. You can tell which of us probably speak loudly... but those of us who are conflict-averse don't react to the loud voice people the same way, precisely because of the nature of the medium.

I tend to be a bit more cerebral and a bit less JYIS than in person. If you doubt that, read the geekfest above:)

    LOL Phantom!!

    You cerebral? NEVER!!

Actually you make some great points. I remember studying this in my literacy class...it really is facinating stuff.
