I won't comment on the inter-office gossip, but as for what to say if you ever get cornered about why you know so much about the dud-world. I tell people I have two sisters, a step mother and a grandmother,(now passed) who were/are duds, and I have heard all their crap! Witnesses will usually back off on that, and non duds will ask if you were ever a dud. Just ask them back," Are you one?" Like "Oh my God!" If they are not they will tell you! When I talk to duds that don't know me I tell them my grandmama was a dud, and that I went to a shit-load of their meetings. This gets them going thinking they can reel me in....Silly people! Wow Beryl, it must be so hard to sit and listen to all that and not let them know what you know about the JW's. What really gets me is the JW's who live two lives. If you know its not for you and don't really believe it but stay in just in case is cowardice. I take a hard line on that kind of behavior. And I'm not talking about fading, people who fade so as not to loose their families are very brave, but people who want it both ways are another story. My sister is like that, she wants to have her cake and eat it too. Keep her "good standing" but still be materialistic and egotistic and suck everything she can out of both worlds. Makes me sick. It sounds like your co-worker is one of those. But on the other hand, maybe he is struggling. Maybe he is beginning to realize the real truth. It is very confusing trying to figure out what is allowable behavior on the outside. When you spend your whole life hearing that the "world loves its own" and that the "world" has no decent standards of behavior, it is easy to be clueless. How would you know?

As far as gossip goes, it is hard not to get sucked into it. I think people engage in gossip because it is a great distraction from their own lives. It is much easier to critique every aspect of someone else's life than to look seriously at our own. Gossip also plays a role in society. People tend to watch their behavior out of fear of being gossiped about.
