Assuming you were brought up as a witness or converted for at least a few years , why do you think it takes so long to work out its not true?
Why did it take so long to work it out?

The witness beliefs and lifestyle are an all consuming method of indoctrination. It quite often takes time, and thoughtful consideration, and looking at the religion from a 'worldly' perspective before you are able to acknowledge that 'things just aren't quite right' with the whole setup.

A horse in harness with blinders on and a feedbag regularly supplied is not readily able to "see" the need to "head for the hills"

Frannie,
I just love your 'gnu-whirled' whatevers - it conjures up visions of gnus getting all whirled up in a giant blender - gnu stew, gnu glue etc etc.

Sleepy,
That is a good question. One I have asked myself many times.
I think that the lack of access to information is the reason it takes so long to realize that this religion is not "the truth". I mean, it never even crossed my mind that the Governing Body were these evil men that are trying to hide what they really are and that they were hiding pedophiles and all of that stuff.
Once I realized that they are actually trying to keep information from people and then to "see" what it is they don't want us to know it was easy to work it out.

It has to do with several things: trusting your parents; the need to be accepted by family and friends who are Dubs; lack of alternate ways of thinking; the demonization of every source of information that is critical of what's being presented to you, etc.
If you are believer like I was and not predisposed to living a double life, it amazes me that people raised in the truth EVER leave it. Without fail, something extraordinary has to happen that triggers a life-long Dubs' interest in finding out the rest of the story.
Frankly, it's more acceptable to me that a person who grows up in the truth having a hard time leaving it than it is for me to understand how someone can become a witness after reaching adulthood. The one or two college-educated witnesses I know who've become the staunchest Dubs -- to the point of even criticizing their JW daughter's interest in college -- totally mystify me. How can a person do all the study required to get a degree and then end up being sucked into a cult? I'll never understand that. -
