I am aware that Simon has a life; but by his own admission, very few threads get locked/deleted. If a mod takes the time to lock a thread, is spending another 2 minutes writing a brief explanation such a big deal?
That's usually all that people want, a reason.
Stinky:
What you suggest sounds reasonable in principle but often (and I am not referring to you) the people who are often deleted are not usually in a mood to be reasonable. Using Trauma Hound as an example. When he got out of control and had to be banned from posting he created obscene user names and flooded the board with his crap. Keeping one moderator up most of the night watching out for his crap. Once he cooled down he realized he had been an ass and apologized. He is still here. (which kind of throws egg in the face of all those Kingdom Hall/elder references).
What often happens is that any explanation offered is challenged by the author. Then several third parties chirp in. It then turns into a huge discussion about moderation. Several new threads are started by the third parties, making the moderation of the board the primary topic. Even Ravyn's post today is an example of that.
Explanations made were rejected. The thread then turned into a general attack on moderation and on Simon, new threads are formed. People start make grandiose good bye threads, trying to make some kind of dramatic statement. Bandwagon jumpers who from day one criticized Simon (Yizuman) had to get in their free shots.
This is what happens when a moderator tries to explain their actions. Moderators starting new threads looking for community support of their actions cause as much trouble. Of course all the little snide shots scattered throughout the threads ("I'm sure this is going to get deleted" "Before Simon gets trigger happy" etc )
So unless the explanation is done via personal message or email I don't think it would help much. But even if done in private mail it wouldn't stop some malcontents from posting such private content elsewhere to garnish support for themselves and their 'woe is me' campaign. Right Franky?
