Although yesterday and today has been most beautiful, with sunny, clear skies, it looks like Isabel is ready to "touch" our land and our lives here on the East coast, and it has a very broad path. In the hours to come, we will see the reality of the best weather predictions.

My husband and I are prepared here as much as posible. Though we are more inland, the eye will cross here at 2AM Friday morning. It is amazing to me the general complacency of many, who believe this is just "hyped up news". Anyone who has ever endured the affects of such great weather occurances, would surely take this very seriously.

My heart goes out to those who have to leave their homes for safety--those that will have to face great personal loss of material things and posibly life. I'll be thinking of those on here, who live in those areas that will receive the brunt.

    Please be safe!

I agree. I spent 13 years living in the Caribbean. I have endured 9 hurricanes, including Hurricane Hugo in 1989 - a category 5 storm which devastated the island of St. Thomas (where I was living) with 160 mph sustained winds, and gusts of 210 mph.

I am now living in Pennsylvania, and while our local forecast is calling for "rain and wind" (sounds innocuous enough), I am reminded of Hurricane Agnes in 1972, which turned the state of Pennsylvania into a disaster area. I spent the entire day bailing out my mother's basement.

Rule of thumb when there is a hurricane in the forecast - be prepared for anything !!!

I was in South Carolina last week and people were taking it pretty seriously. Started boarding up windows over the weekend--stuff like that. I'm still hoping that by some miracle the storm will go away without causing any damage!

Here in PA the forecast is for wind gusts to 60 mph and 2-4 or more inches of rain. Floyd dumped 7.38 inches on us in one day in 1999. We don't need to take drastic action here with Isabel, but we should expect flooding and power outages.

I hope you and yours are safe Sentinel!

Oh, compounding the the flood potential here will be the fact that remnants of Henri dumped almost 5 inches of rain over the weekend into Monday. So streams and rivers are already swelled, and the ground is saturated. So the stage may indeed be set for some serious flood damage.

    Hey Sentinel:

Didn't recognize your post as referring to Hurricane Isabel.. so I started a topic on the same subject. OOPS!..

And that was my question.. Is everybody safe down there. What's going on?

The news talked of a lot of evacution along the coast.

Keep us posted please, if you can.. on how you make out through this..

These things can be scary!!.. there isn't much that can compare to the power of NATURE.

I live 250 miles from the coast so I will be ok. I'm glad I pulled my camper home this spring, it was on Emerald Isle, right next to Atlantic Beach. I hope my aunt will be OK, she lives in Morehead City, she will probably come here anyway because of a family reunion we are having this Sat.

Everything around here is or has already closed down. We are right next to DC, and more people are now getting prepared. Our County offices closed today and tomorrow, but my office is part of the judicial system, and it was work as normal.....just got word we will close at one today, but tomorrow is still pending. Right now the skies are dark, but it's eerily quiet....I will be going home soon.

With so many Virginian's already without electricity in VA Beach, I'm certain we will lose power here. The eye and the right side strongest band will go right over us. I suppose we are as prepared as we can be for the sustaining winds of 74mph, with wind gusts near 90 that they are predicting. It could be much worse, for sure. I think this is a first hit for DC, and it is built on marshland anyway. Lots of flooding I'm sure.

Rocketman, I have seen the reports about all the flooding in PA. You guys do not need any more rain there for sure. They say we will recieve anywhere from 6-10 inches as it passes through. That is a lot of rain on already saturated land. We'll probably lose many trees.

We can't control nature for sure, and this is such an awesome storm. Dad used to take us to Florida during the hurricane season when we were small, and usually, we'd be trying to "outrun" one coming in. Very frightening memories for certain. Those times are etched in my mind, as well as Agnes and the damage it did when we lived in the Maryland mountains.

For those on the coast, I can only hope that they do pay heed and get out while they can. Personal possessions are important, but lives are more important. Why take a chance? The weather people only predict as well as they can, and these storms are known to be unpredictable for sure.

We are due to be hit by the worst after we go to bed tonight. I'm sure our electric will go out. As soon as I can, I will come back and let you know how it went.

Special K, don't worry about the duplicate site. Actually, I was surprised that there wasn't more on here about this subject.

I'm about 160 miles from the coast. The wind is starting to pick up here. I was going to head for the store where I sometimes work weekends(edited to add: I was going there because it is a brick building, therefor much safer. Didn't want anyone to think I was crazy enough to go out in this for groceries) but on the news just a few mintues ago, they said if you haven't left for shelter already, to just stay put, so, I am stuck here now. sounds scarey here right now.

I just pray that no trees fall on my house.
