The JW's are like a club where you get in free but you have to pay to get out. GaryB

“When our own thoughts are forbidden, when our questions are not allowed and our doubts are punished, when contacts and friendships outside of the organization are censored, we are being abused for an end that never justifies its means. When our heartaches knowing we have made friendships and secret attachments that will be forever forbidden if we leave, we are in danger. When we consider staying in a group because we cannot bear the loss, disappointment, and sorrow our leaving will cause for ourselves and those we have come to love, we are in a cult" p.s. I was told that this was written by a women that survived Jonestown. Someone shared this with me, I'm passing it on to you. Lisa

    Hey Lisa, good quote!

They WTS makes like it's a "choice" to leave, but then they make you pay dearly for making such a "choice".

In typical cult fashion, when you first join there are smiles, open arms, everything is positive, everything is too good to be true. Once you become old news, that's when the backstabbing begins, that's when the gossiping begins that's when the joy ends. Everything becomes stale, everything becomes negative, true colors are shown. Then as many have mentioned, when you make an educated decision to leave, your shunned, fired from your job ( if you work for a jw ), your now all of sudden worse than Hitler.

Something else that proves they are a cult is the "Us against the World" mentality. If your in, your good. If your not, your evil.

By the way Lisa, that quote is gold. I am going to use that with someone I know, thanks.

If it weren't for that I would have left that religion when I was 17.

    That's why they do it.

You got this right on. Its weird to leave, you must first go through a gauntlet of demeaning looks and questions along with most of the time ultimately feeling altogether rotten about your self for attempting it by your family members. If you are the only one in your family that is a Dub then your way ahead, cause at lest you can have someone to treat you like your a human being worthy of a hand shake or cup of tea Earl gray. Oh and of course if you have grown a beard during your absence you will at once be looked upon as disfellowshiped if you return to meetings or assemblys and be ignored even by your most best friends, by and large. So there goes your own taste in dress right out the window. You know what I hate is the self incrimination they heap on you, when they toss this idea at you by saying "have you given thought how this will affect your preaching activity, or your relationship with Jehovah"? Yes these are big and very affective manipulating tools used by the GB to gain control of you rather than you controlling your self in your own life. Granted we all need good suggestions from time to time but when we feel like unless we do what the person or persons are saying then some ghastly bad things will happen to us or to those we love as in "they will be destroyed", then something is really wrong. For heavens sakes what's the difference between Hell and Armageddon, its a scare thingy to make you do this or that.

Cults are hard to get out of. I think many of us had very difficult times leaving because we had it pounded into our heads that everyone and everything outside the Jws was Satanic. You're told not to question things, your faith is weak if you doubt. Personal decisions are made on Wrathtower articles, so the decision in affect has already been made. Going againt the spirit of the organization brings rebuke, sometimes removal. They convince you that we need them 5 times a week, to live forever, not to mention they train you to study it on your own at home. Can't give an opprotunity for the devil you know. Vacations without a meeting is an implied sin. When can a person ever breath without their influence?
