Of course they can shut down privately owned websites. As it is, there are very few dub sites out there, because most congregations will consider a brother who runs a site for witnesses as "unexemplary" and "not suited for privileges". If it were made a dfing offense, I believe the remaining ones would shut down right quick.
On the other hand, I'm still attending meetings, and I've gotten no inkling that the Society has any such plans in mind. So I'm kind of curious where your family got their information, Will.

Euphemism,
Don't ask me where they got their information. My parents dislike the internet to begin with, so it may have been some off handed remark some elder told them. That is why I was asking the question here. Also I know a few years ago they came down on any unauthorized web sites and chat rooms. Seems that maybe it is time again for "mother" organization to put her foot down again.

I don't think it is possible for them to ban Internet use. Lots of JWs rely on it for their businesses and kids have to use it at school, for example. The Internet has zillions of legitimate uses, it's not just porn and anti-JW stuff!
What they will do is continue to demonise it so that any information about the religion that comes from it is automatically treated as apostate lies.
I think JWs will be 'encouraged' to cut down their Internet use to just what is essential. Others on this board have suggested that the WBTS may introduce some sort of nanny software that JWs will be 'encouraged' to install on their personal PCs to 'protect' them from apostate sites.

You mean theres more???

My dad went ape when he found out I'd been on apostate sites, and wouldn't talk to me. My parting shot was to ask why he had looked up his illness on the internet, he said it was because he wanted to find out about it. I asked why because everything you read on the internet is lies...... When I went back up to see them yesterday, he was totally different, going out of his way to be nice to me. I could see the wtbts trying to ban the internet for obvious reasons, but I couldn't see it actually happening in practice. It could work out to be the 'straw that broke the camels back' for many people.

How can they shut down privatly owned web sites?
That is not how the WTS works... they never "force" a person to do anything... they always allow a person to do something "on their own".
Here is what they will do... They will find out who runs or is part of a given site. A lot of people will freely post their name and congregation name. After all, what do they have to fear from Jehover's Loving Channel on Earth(TM)? The WTS then writes to the local body of elders who then "ask" the person to stop the activities. If the person refuses, then they will be DFed for "interfering with Jehover's arrangement".
At no time did the WTS or the Elders ?force? a person to stop posting? but they were able to ?clean? the congregation.

Suppose they take down the JW's sites and they will have them thinking what is the sense of having the internet if you cannot access what they call good info. They must be loosing and having a lot of people questioning because they are finding anti JW's sites .No excuse to have a computer than.
They are having a lot of people questioning and leaving...I should have said.

If they do that will it stop my mother from sending me goofy ecards and trying to IM me all the time...LOL! They've got my father so convinced he won't go online for anything.

As it stands now, when typing in the words "Jehovah's Witness" in an internet search, the majority of the sites that come up are anti-JW sites. If a non-JW (such as myself) or a JW with questions wants to find out more about them, the information will be biased to our benefit. This is why I never got involved with them.
In my opinion, this will backfire on them. I am subscribed to 2 JW sites and these dubs are very lonely people. They love the chat rooms and message boards to talk to JW's in other areas because they have no true, nonjudgemental friends within their own congregations. If the Society were to
encourageforce them to close down this could lead to more departures. The curiousity alone would have some JW's looking on the apostate sites. As brain-washed as someone may be, they can only take so much before reaching a breaking point.Just my thoughts,

As a matter of practice the Bethel CIA (AKA Service Dept) and it's long arm of the Law (AKA Legal Services) already harass any owner of a dub web site that they feel offers too much info. I know some who have gotten letters from Service/Legal advising them to cease and desist certain postings on their sites.
Some time ago the KM stated that it is not necessary to have personal web sites about the borg as that is already provided for by the FDS.
It's all about control of information in and out. But I don;t think they can ever control it like they really wouold like. In other words no dub would have any site that mentions dubs.
