How many are PIMO ??

It’s an interesting situation Phizzy, the demands of the WT cult involve conformity and being seen to be part of the membership is part of being in the JW social club. If you no longer believe the WT tripe, to get around being shunned members become PIMO. (Phisically In Mentally Out) PIMOs have to put up with severe frustration knowing JWs are a fraud but locked in socially and POMIs live with the guilt of believing but don’t attend, I don’t know which is worse.

I spoke with a PIMO friend today and he thought about about 6 out of 70 (9%) of the attendees in his cong are PIMO. These do not answer up at meetings, have absolute minimum contribution to the org, they just attend. This figure does not include those conflicted souls who carry on a pretense of believing. Perhaps another what 3 or 5%, how can we know? Then there probably is a larger proportion who have major doubts and given an excuse or opportunity would love to be free of the org. So I reckon about one million JWs don’t really believe and another million would leave given the dropping of shunning penalties.

The big difficulty is that awake JWs cannot get together to plan a mass breakout because to admit being PIMO is likely to be rewarded by an inquisition and then shunning—at the moment.

As Wake me points out from Pinker's quote, the situation could escalate to the extent that PIMO's will become the norm and only the true believers will remain unable to see the fraud. The religion will become a hollow shell, all about appearances, and is likely to implode eventually when a majority are just seat fillers. The young in particular these days are not believers just club members.

    This is SO TRUE!

Of course, to be a true believer, one would have to know what the beliefs are. Most JWs haven't got a clue! They simply check their brain at the door.

In my hall of about 75 "publishers" I know for sure there are four of us PIMO to a large extent (of not believing Armageddy is coming or who literally mock the antics of Lett and some of the directives of the GB).

I suspect there are at least another three who by their demeanor and actions (inactions) seem somewhat or even largely PIMO/questioning too.

So a good ten per cent I would say.

Now I don't go round telling these others that I recommend they come on this forum or read CoC but they all look at Youtube clips of the ARC and share negative news items about child abuse and question overlapping generations.

I think the number is growing. And the apathy and increased vacations and weekends away by many others is telling too.

They may not all believe the emperor has no clothes but they certainly believe he is very scantily clad!

There are many in the congregation, including those in positions of leadership, that are closet apostates. I was an elder for several years and served after learning TTATT. I am convinced that at least one other fellow elder knew TTATT.

So, who are the others in the midst of brothers and sisters that are of a joint mind? We may never know...

I was PIMO for many years, basically to preserve my marriage. It was a pretty awful experience. Looking back, it wasn't worth it.

    PHIZZY:

I always wondered this myself after I started “fading”:..what percentage of JWs sitting in any given congregation are really in their minds and hearts still believers?? Today, I would imagine the number of Physically In Mentally Out is even higher than it was five years ago.

In my case, I was PIMO for several years before my actual “fade” in 2001. I must say, it was a very uncomfortable situation which I managed by missing many meetings, making excuses and avoiding people. Luckily for me I had no family there and since I worked full time and was on the fringes nobody took too much notice.

The general picture of this and the religion is not a good one IMO because they have an ever-shrinking core of faithful believers. There is no way to really know for certain what people are thinking and who’s just biding their time until they are ready to bolt.

Wake Me, thanks for sharing that Pinker quote. He's one of my favorite authors. I've read several of his books and watched several interviews with him and many of his lectures, but I wasn't familiar with this particular quote!

I was PIMO for about 15 years, I would have loved to talk to my Grandma, she started saying things before I did. I couldn't because it would have gotten back to my mom and she would tell my kids(adults) and on it goes. About a year after she died, my kids, their mates and grandkids were out. I so wish things had timed out better. I just couldn't risk my kids, anything but my kids. It's just sad.
