I've kept birds. I had homing pigeons flying free, a pet crow that I rescued with a damaged wing that quickly became tame and an aviary full of foreign birds, paradise whydah's, that sort of thing.
I'm quite interested in British finches. I'd like to try and breed from a pair of our shyest and largest finch, the Hawfinch, sometime.
I forgot one more story, one which may explain why I have a soft spot for birds. When I was about 8 or 9 one of the neighbor kids knocked a baby robin out of it's nest and picked it up. Since the mother wouldn't take it back my family adopted it. We taught it, as best we could, to dig for worms and to indroduce it to other robins. I still remember my mother walking around with it on her shoulder while making dinner. She had so many bird crap stains on her tshirts...LOL! It took two tries but we got it accepted into a group of robins that were flying South that Fall. It's one of the strongest and best memories of my childhood.
I was mowing the lawn a few years ago when I was dive bombed by something. I near shat myself waving my hands and batting this mmmmmmonster off my head. My youngest boy was in the yard and I saw the mmmmmmmmmonster Cockatiel fly towards him, trying to land on his head. I told Callum to stay calm (unlike me) and the bird landed on his shoulder and started nibbling his ear. It was a hand reared baby that just wanted to live on your shoulder. I hate bird cages, so he lived in the back room which was basically flyscreen. He escaped out the door a few thymes, but was relatively easy to coax back onto your shoulder. His final escape was wehn I was at work, been gone hours. I'm sure he found another shoulder to land on. He constatly rangf like a phone, said hello or sounded like a dogs squeeky toy.
I hope he's happy
Steve
Budgies come from Australia.
PS, we got chooks. Put an ad in the paper for free roosters, got rid of two, still got one to go. Noisy muthers they are
She is the one I have told you about. She is seated in the palm my hand, as she cannot perch properly due to the fact she has no feet.
But she is a sweet thing, and she likes to sit with Rayzorblade sometimes, while he's on the computer, once in awhile, wanting neck and head scratches.
