Pinoy Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia face deportation

    Philippine Daily Inquirer / 05:40 AM February 24, 2017

BAGUIO CITY—Jehovah’s Witnesses (JW) in the Philippines have asked the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to intercede on behalf of Filipinos who face arrest or deportation in Russia for belonging to their faith.

The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of the Philippines, the legal and corporate arm of JW, made the appeal when it met DFA officials this week on behalf of more than 8,000 Filipino Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia.

Hundreds of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia are affected by a warning issued by the Russian prosecutor general about what it described as the JW’s “extremist activities.”

The law, enforced in 2002, bars “public and religious associations or any other organizations, or of mass media, or natural persons [from undertaking activities]… aimed at the forcible change of the foundations of the constitutional system and the violation of the integrity of the Russian Federation.”

So according to the law in Russia, "The prohibition covers religious activities that impart “propaganda of the exclusiveness, superiority or deficiency of individuals on the basis of their attitude to religion, social, racial, national, religious or linguistic identity.”

So therefore, JW's are not the only one that would be labeled as extremist. Many other religions and group would. But the average JW won't have a clue, they will think it's persecution for them.

So now we get a true look into where the JW growth in Russia is really coming from.

8,000 JWs being deported to The Philippines. Sounds like the making of a JW refuge camp. No homes to go back to. No jobs to go back to. Watchtower must be terrified that they will be required to financially support their brothers who face persecution for their faith.

This is the early stages of armegeddeon as brought out by a few e-mails circulating the JW globe. Meet at the KH and leave your phones at home for 7 days with further instruction coming down from the GB. I read this and hope it happens soon, so the current R&F can see for themselves, they are no different than the Jim Jones cult.

8000+ pinoy's in Russia?? What is the ratio of jws to population in the philippines ?

That suggests there's an awful lot of pinoy OFW,s in russia.

The Governing Body of JW`s will probably wash their hands of these people stating they are not employees of JW`s , they are only volunteers who do so of their own accord.

The organization of jehovahs Witnesses has no obligation to these people as they are not in the employ of the JW organization.

jwleaks ,the JW organization has no fear of a financial impact of the deportation of 8000 Jw`s back to the Phillipines for the reasons I stated above.

haha - funny, I was actually going to post this myself but didn't want to waste one of my 'new topic' slots because....

If it doesn't sound right, it probably isn't right.

    8,000.... or 17??

Even though I understand that the Philippine Daily Inquirer is a well-regarded and reliable newspaper which stated in the OP article...

more than 8,000 Filipino Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia.

Hundreds of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia are affected

As stan livedeath writes above, 8,000 JWs in Russia sounds like a lot, an awful lot!

Seems like The Moscow Times reveals that the OP article is probably badly written because in a 2015 article it stated:

In 2004, there were 2,010 Filipino nationals in Russia. In 2013, that number had soared to 4,335, according to the most recent statistics from the Commission of Filipinos Overseas, a Filipino government agency that monitors migration.

Local Filipinos said the current number is probably much higher — they estimate Russia houses around 8,000 Filipinos, if unregistered migrants are taken into account. About 93 percent of all the Filipinos in Russia live in Moscow, said Lalunio.

So actually around 8,000 Filipinos in total in Russia - hence the following line in the OP article regarding "hundreds being affected", but even that TBH is suspect - the publisher ratio in the Philippines is 1-in-483, so out of 8,000 that would actually make only 17 Filipino JWs in Russia.

Or in other words, using the same publisher ratio, there would need to be around 385,000 Filipinos in Russia in order for there to be 8,000 JWs. (btw there are just over 200,000 JWs in the Philippines)

Therefore the OP's article just didn't add up as being correct for me, but, hey ho! I might be wrong of course....

Ah, the joys of Fact Checking!

    thanks for that Spil.

so--if the ratio is 1 jw to 483 population in the philippines....

if there were 8000 JW' pinoy in Russia--we could expect the TOTAL pinoy ex pat population in Russia to be around 3.8 million.

    ha ha--right.

stan livedeath: if there were 8000 JW' pinoy in Russia--we could expect the TOTAL pinoy ex pat population in Russia to be around 3.8 million.

haha - mea culpa! - yes, thanks for picking that up! my mistake - misread my calculator - for 8,000 JW with a ratio of 1-in-483 there would need to be a base of 3.8 MILLION
