For the 1881-1885 RV, the 1898 ARV, and 1901 ASV Bibles there was already strong support to their translators in conveying the idea of "overseer" at 1 Peter 5:2. I say that because each of those Bibles say "exercising the oversight" in the main text and they each say "Some ancient authorities omit exercising the oversight" in the translators' footnote. I notice though that the 1971 Second Edition of the RSV NT excludes "exercising the oversight" in the main text and that in the translators' footnote it says "Other ancient authorities add exercising the oversight". The NRSV says "exercising the oversight" in the main text and in the footnote it says "Other ancient authorities lack exercising the oversight".

ESV (the revision of the RSV) 2001-2011 - "Shepherd the flock of God that is among you EXERCISING OVERSIGHT, not under compulsion, but willingly AS GOD WOULD HAVE YOU, not for shameful gain, but eagerly."
New World Translation 1961 edition - "Shepherd the flock of God in your care, not under compulsion but willingly, neither for love of dishonest gain, but eagerly."
New World Translation 2013 edition - "Shepherd the flock of God under your care, SERVING AS OVERSEERS, not under compulsion, but willingly BEFORE GOD; not for love of dishonest gain, but eagerly.”
The phrase "taking the oversight thereof" (ἐπισκοποῦντες) is omitted by the NASB from 1960 to 1973, and the RSV because it is not in Sinaiticus original or Vaticanus, but the phrase is included in the NIV, RV, ASV, NRSV and the ESV because it is in the Majority, A, Sinaiticus correction and P72.
Westcott and Hort as well as the older Nestles Critical text (4th edition 1934 and 21st edition 1975) omitted the phrase "TAKING THE OVERSIGHT THEREOF" (ἐπισκοποῦντες) but now the UBS/Nestle-Aland/Vatican text puts it back [in brackets], and the newer NASBs now include the reading along with the Holman, ESV and NIV.

It is interesting that 1st and 2nd Peter were written very late in the 1st Century by which time the early Church was becoming more organised and maybe here in Chapter 5 of 1st Peter we see more the emergence of the concept of a Bishop , who is not merely an Elder of the general group of Congregation Elders, but has Oversight of them and the rest of the Flock.
So that makes the J.W authority figure, Chairman of the Body of Elders, a Bishop !

It is true that the English word Bishop derives from the Greek word Episkopos.
