I personally received a slip from an elder to go to someone's house who requested a study online. So apparently that's how it works. (I didn't do it.)

I remember being given names and addresses of people who were suposedly interested only to find out when meeting the person that they did not request a visit they were not interested and they just so happen to have a witness relative who has tried on many occasions to get them to study.

The person of course was none too happy bout it and promptly told us not to come back.

Does it track personal data of the person that does they request for the study? Like i.p. address, etc. ?

Almost certainly, yes, but it is trivial to use a proxy or VPN to hide your IP address (just search for free web proxy, or install a VPN plugin for your browser, such as Hola).

If you want to get really hard to track, then use a TOR Browser. (only the FBI, NSA or some other government organization would be capable of tracking you, and even then it's a lot of effort for them to do it.)

On that note, I remember when they started pushing the site and they were so, so proud that they were getting so many hits from China.

    ...

Anyone who has run a website would know what was really happening (i.e. bots), but they were certainly proud of it.

I'm studying to become a white-hat hacker, and one subject I'm examining at the moment is the history of the of the collective known as Anonymous. One of the things they are most well known for is defacing the websites of the Church of Scientology back in 2011. Among the reasons listed for taking on such an endeavor is the fact that they were revealed to be highly controlling which didn't sit well with anarchists. Heh, I bet it wouldn't have taken much for them to shift their focus to websites of the Jehovah's Witnesses, though I doubt it would have been any more effective at stopping them than it was at stopping Scientology.

@Saethydd, I believe Anonymous actually has cracked some into the WTS financial operations, tracing money that allegedly goes to protecting pedophiles, etc. I don't know the extent or verity of this, however.

I've already used that feature in the past to troll on my fathers congregation. The funny part is that my dad was the assigned minister to response to my fake request.

I must confess that I need to control myself a lot to not laugh when my father share with me the unpleasant experience to made a few kilometers to find a specific house and after a conversation with the house owner he realized that was a prank and he have to apologize to the owner.

The address that I used was a small office so it's easy to find online the address and the full name of the owner.

After that I repeated the prank two times, but I don't have any feedback because maybe the task was assigned to other publisher on that congregation.

Have there been other cases like this? If prayers really work to attract Witnesses to your door, why does the Borg need a website function that's so prone to fraud?

Never been to their website so I didn't even know that there was such form to request bible studies. If we're going to look at ineffective ways of communicating and using means that can be fraudulent, forget the website. Look at the bible.
