Preaching to the Choir

I was talking to our new alignment tech Johnny today. Johnny's a bible-thumper and I'm agnostic, which makes for an interesting mix. We did find one thing we agree on today though. Neither of us likes The Empire.

It started where I mentioned my folks and Johnny asked about them. I told him that we aren't close and then explained why. "Remember I told you I used to be one of Jehovah's Witnesses? Well since I was kicked out, they're not allowed to associate with me anymore." Johnny stopped what he was doing and looked at me and said "what?!"

Then I explained disfellowshipping to him. And asked "now is that a [f'ing] cult or what?" He said that oh yes he knows it's a cult all right, he told me he knows all about the Witnesses, but he didn't know that about the disfellowshipping. Well maybe Johnny doesn't know as much about the Witnesses as he thinks he does. I can certainly correct that! I'm not going out in field service anymore, but I'm damn sure doing some field un-service!

Turns out his aunt is married to a "brother" in a nearby congregation. This brother knows me, I've known his family for years, since a child. I'm sure disfellowshipping will be a hot topic next time Johnny sees Brady.

Gotta plant the seeds whenever you can. I'm sure the subject will come up again, Johnny and I have plenty of time during the day to talk. He showed interest so I'm marking him down as a return visit. (or is it return call? I forget) Looks like I may have an Un-Study!!!

Don't you just love incidental un-witnessing?!

Mike, I do the same thing every chance I get! I incidental un-witness and share the un-good news whenever the oppurtunity arises. I feel alot more confident in what I'm un-preaching....LOL!

    Thanks for the strory!

Suppose DF'ing (which could imply lack of "Family Values") were the topic on every householder's mind: Wouldn't Field Service be so much more wonderful???

I get plenty of opportunities to un-witness, and I take advantage of them! It would be interesting to know just how much time is spent un-witnessing by X-JW's. If you would subtract all the time JW's spend in coffee shops, we probably spend more time un-witnessing than they do witnessing. And probably with alot more enthusiasm.

    Does that make us un-pioneers?

Yep, un-witnessing is FUN! I mentioned my experiences as a Witness to the mother of my kids' best friends and she almost choked -- turns out her mother is a Witness (in my parents' old congregation of Desoto, no less) and her conversion led to the breakup of my friend's parents (her dad is Catholic). She said that she was lucky her dad absolutely refused to allow her mom to take the kids to the Kingdom Hall and agrees it's a bad cult.

    Small world, huh?

    Mike,

I didn?t really get to see what non-JWs really thought about JWs for the first time until I was df?d. People who I thought had high opinions of JWs (because they said so for years) surprised me with their candid thoughts, especially when they saw how long-time friends treated me out in social settings. Ever since the lights went on, I?ve been able to do some un-witnessing myself, telling people the whole truth about The Truth?.

    Good job, Mike.
