What a difference a word makes!

It's just a little word, nothing special, we use it every day, but how it can change people's thinking! And how it can be used to "support" a teaching!

What's the word? See if you can spot it in this quote from the "Inspired" book:

"We should place like store on the unity of the congregation today, even refusing fellowship or greetings to those who apostatize to another teaching beyond that received through the inspired scriptures." (page 260)

Did you see it? Well, it's not essential to the paragraph, so here's the paragraph amended:

"We should place like store on the unity of the congregation today, even refusing fellowship or greetings to those who apostatize to another teaching beyond that received in the inspired scriptures."

See it? Yes, it's the word "through". Used here it underscores the authority of the F&DS "through whom" all "present truth" is dispensed.

    Just a little word....

It's good to be reminded sometimes that most indoctrination is very subtle. It's the rare instance of programming that stands out as a "Jim Jones" moment. Thanks for pointing this out.

Could not help but notice in the same paragraph, discussung 2 John

It appears that in Johns day as in modern times there were some who were not content to stay with the plain simple teachings of Christ. They wanted something more, something that would tickle their ego...........

    Hmmmm. , thinking of dates like 607, 1914, 1975

    The Blood issue

All manner of rules against smoking, dress and conduct .

Who was not content to stay with the simple teaching of Christ? So who is the apostate?

Good post! Thanks! It's like the assembly talk that said the teachings have to agree with "the pattern of truth". (Whatever that is. . . )

I must be blind, because I fail to see the appreciable difference between "received through the scriptures" and "received in the scriptures".

    Help me out here please.......

By using "through the scriptures" it is permissible that inspired teachings come from other "scriptural" sources, like the FD&S. If they had just said "in the scriptures" then they'd be limited to teachings found directly in the bible and not from other sources.

That's what I got out of it anyway.

Maybe I really have been brainwashed. I'm so used to hearing "through the Bible", it sounds perfectly normal to me. I've always understood the intent of the statement (or so I thought anyway...) to mean "from" the Bible. Seems synonymous to me.

By the way, that big woman in the other thread doesn't scare me at all!

I think you probably are! But don't worry, you're in good company!

There's so much of this type of thing. It's only when you "stand back" from the Borg and look objectively, that a lot of this becomes clear.

BTW drwtsn, ya got it in one! Well done.

    Cheers, Ozzie
