    Mass Formation Control

Most of the changes in the organization have been doctrinal and as a rule JWs would not openly discuss these for fear of being labeled an apostate. Examples include overlapping generations and types and antitypes. Some changes are procedural such as the amount of preaching time needed to qualify as a pioneer and not having to count hours any more but whether it’s doctrinal or procedural none of these changes are visible.

An exJW friend of mine and I were discussing the recent changes including brothers being able to wear beards and sisters wearing trousers. A lot of brothers are now sporting beards or goatees. They don’t question why after all these decades it’s now ok to wear a beard - they’re just happy to roll with it and not having to count time makes being a JW easier than it has ever been.

It’s a modern phenomena we’ve not seen before because these changes are visual and they propagate throughout the organization and unless you’re a PIMO nobody seems to question or connect the dots as to why these changes are happening.

I would call this mass formation control (I adapted the term from medical researcher Robert Malone). Think of the Queen Bee deciding to change direction and all the worker bees follow her instinctively.

In real life wearing a beard is a small thing. You either have one or you don’t. Nobody really cares and you might get the odd compliment for growing one or shaving it off. Not so in the organization.

For decades beards were banned. My dad wore one and was never appointed as a ministerial servant because of it. Now, not only can you wear one, you don’t even have to wear a suit jacket and tie and sisters can wear trousers as long as they don’t have a meeting part.

This is a good example of the butterfly effect where a small change in a deeply connected religious ecosystem can influence larger changes. Wearing a beard is a small change but seeing Governing Body members wear them after “new light” was published is a larger change and it benefits the Society because they want to be seen as progressive while at the same time they continue to exert control over the membership.

Multiple changes happening within a short period of time can overwhelm and confuse the membership but because these changes are seen as positive they happily come into agreement with them because it makes their load lighter. It also creates a buzz of excitement as they wonder what will change next.

Could making birthdays a conscious matter be the next big thing? Absolutely, because with the changes in disfellowshipping and marking, it is more likely that some witnesses will take liberties and decide to quietly observe the day of their birth and may invite others to join them and they will be able to do so without causing waves. If this propagates and is allowed to flourish it could become the defacto norm.

We are “witnessing” a metamorphosis in the organization as they position themselves for the long haul throughout the 2020s and beyond.

Make no mistake, the GB and its helpers know *exactly* what they’re doing. They are well versed in marketing techniques and the effect this has on human psychology. Survival is first and foremost their main priority.

I agree that they know what they are doing but there is nothing sophisticated in their strategy. They have access to all the numbers that they collect from Secretaries, CO's and Branches, and the numbers are bleak.

The GB knows that the way to retain and attract new members is to lighten the load . Reports from the field prove that members feel that the load is too heavy. So, they make changes that they feel will make members sigh with relief.

However, eventually, there is nothing else they can do. They can't quit shunning. They can't stop demanding that congs turn over their funds. They can't stop selling KHs. They can't turn their CSA records over to authorities.

They are backed into a corner and the only thing left is to relax holidays and blood. They may allow birthday celebrations but they won't relax their view of blood transfusions. They have a huge legal department and it still isn't enough to field all the challenges.

Yeah, if anyone thinks there’s some grand long-term master plan at work, they’re very mistaken.

For one thing, the Org’s entire theology precludes long-term planning.

ThomasMore - “…Reports from the field prove that members feel that the load is too heavy…”

Assuming you’re talking about the ministry, it’s ironic, given that that particular load became so heavy only because they needed the Mississippi-sized paper trail to qualify for charity-status, instead of doing actual charitable acts.

Strategy? There is no long-term, pro-active strategy. Other than simply to survive, their "strategy" is merely their responses/reactions they must make to avoid financial problems with various governmental authorities around the globe.

Every one of the recent changes is a direct response to a government inquiry, or adverse decision of a court, or taxing authority, or even a civil lawsuit, etc

There strategy is best described as Wack-A-Mole.

    The blood policy.

There is no way out of this one. Its impossible. Remove that & the Borg collapses overnight.

“Whack-a-mole”… damn, I wish I’d thought of that one. 😄

Question: What must it cost WT to maintain a huge in-house legal department? Add to this burden...what must it cost WT to maintain outside expert legal lawyers/consultants & expert appellate attorneys? Damn!

The in-house crew more-or-less works for free.

The outsourced one? Who the fuck knows?

In the past I know WT has provided a private residence for an attorney and his family who relocated while he volunteered his time at Patterson.

I also know of local JW attorneys (those who must had disobeyed counsel about higher education) have assisted in insignificant local cases and likely did so free of charge.

The private (non-JW) attorneys that are hired for cases that risk huge settlements/judgements are likely paid hourly, just like anyone else pays them. Perhaps they get a discount for their "charitable" status, or even pro bono work, but I suspect they "lawyer up" and just pay the price for attorneys who specialize in issues like CSA.

Many times free labor comes with a very huge liability. Take WT's lead attorney Philip Brumley. This dude was penalized a hefty $154,400.00 for deceiving a Montana CSA court case. WT appealed...guess what? The higher court told WT to pay the damn fine!

Even free labor comes at a high cost!

I'm told Philip Brumley is being sent back to law school. Apparently Phil skipped out on the law school section entitled: 'Penalties For Lying & Deceiving In Court Proceedings!'
