Any of you all do any kind of community/volunteer work that is fun and rewarding?

I used to, but lately I have had to pull back and work on myself. Once I get myself straightened around, perhaps I can start helping others again.

Too much at a certain time in my life..
Hey.. if you have to start hiring a baby sitter to do volunteer work.. then that is tooo much..so.. then I rebalanced and circumstances changed.
Now I donate 3 hours a week to the local elementary school.. and that is manageable most of the time.

Literacy organizations, child abuse organizations, mental health advocate. I have just started working politically to get the abuse reporting laws in my area changed to include clergy. We hope to volunteer with some food banks, various programs at work. Some of these I worked with even when an active JW>

Yes. I've been a full time volunteer since 1989. I run the Soup Kitchen here in Tallahassee. When I leave the kitchen at l p.m. every afternoon (Mon.-Fri.) I go to the State Library where I am a volunteer researcher until 4:45 p.m. My life used to be dull and boring before I became involved. Not anymore.
I help put on a summer mini-camp for kids who live in the housing projects of S.F every year - it's an aspect of the Operation Dream program (maybe SF Jim has heard of it).
I've also done the SMART reading program with kids in schools, and other projects.
I volunteer at the local school.
I am also planning to volunteer at the local hospital
My wife Tink just started volunteering at the Red Cross. Today was her second full day and she loves it. She's working in the office on data entry but there is alot of needs there, you may check out your local Red Cross.

I help organize big fund raisers for Make-a-Wish, the org. that grants special wishes to kids facing life-threatening illness. These are lots of work for me, but I always need volunteers to help for an hour or so; most charitable events are like this, you just have to ask, and they'll put you to work! Also, I periodically donate supplies to Humane Society. That's an easy one to do: I tell everyone what I'm doing (friends, family, customers, strangers.) They all pitch in, some give cans of dog food, others give a few bucks so I can buy stuff at the store. Eventually, when I've got a trunk full, I drop it off at the shelter. It only costs me whatever I personally donate, and a few minutes to drive to the animal shelter-but boy, it makes a difference!
Find an issue you care about, and have fun!
I have the phone line for "Women for Sobriety" here in Minneapolis. A sobriety program that is congruent to AA. I am a resource person. I am committed for a year.
