On our twenty fifth anniversay, I took my wife up through Nova Scotia to Cape Breton Island. She was absolutely fascinated with the "tidal bore" we observed in Truro. The trip around the Cabot Trail was magnificent!
My first trip to Cape Breton Island was by train. We had to cross by ferry as the causeway was under construction. Shortly after the war, some Canadians opened up their houses so that travelers could get good home cooked meals. The food was plentiful and delicious.
On one trip, we took the ferry back from Yarmouth to Bar Harbor. Since we were late in catching the last boat, we looked for a room. All motels and hotels were filled. But one woman opened up her house and put us up in a guest room. She recommended a good restaurant that featured fish chowder. When we ordered, the waitress said "Top or Bottom?" We did not have the faintest idea of what she meant. She then asked if we wanted just the broth on top or the fish and vegetables on the bottom. Needless to say, we ordered "the bottom."
We have many fond memories of our trips to Canada. We have always found Canadians hospitable and kind.
