Last Saturday we went to get Claire's Duroc. He placed
3rd in his Division at the Breeders Competition that
same night, and we took him home after that. There is
Grand Champion, Reserve champion, 3rd and so on in
each of the breeds- and for male (barrow) and female
(gilt) within those breeds. This is good for Claire as
this means she has a potential champion pig on her
hands. We go everyday and she shovels pig poop and
rakes the stall. I tried to help her yesterday and she
told me to leave her alone and let her do it! Anyway,
I will take pics soon and email them.
Coco weighs 80lbs and eats like a pig... -s.

I wish I could be there to help her. Anyone else have kids that do the Future Farmers of America?

    Sincerely,

No but I raised a piggy when I was 7 I had planned to show it but poor piggy got out of her stall and my brother threw her back into the stall when he caught her he injured her leg, so of course I couldn't show her

It's great that she's doing this, Valis. It's a really good program, and she'll get alot out of it. Whether or not she's involved in agriculture in the future, she'll take away many good experiences. Responsibility, leadership, people skills, it's all part of the game.

I and most of my family came up through the 4-H and FFA programs, as did my wife, and her family. Of course Clay (age 10) is showing cattle, has since he was 7 (showed some sheep, too). You can't show in the state shows here 'til you're 9, I'm pretty sure it's the same in Texas and prob'ly most other places, so we're just good and getting started. So far we've just been feeding decent ones, still selling the best ones, 'til he gets a little experience under his belt. He's about ready, though, and you can imagine how well Dad likes gettin' beat, so we're ready to get serious, now.

<--- Note the pic - Clay's 1st place prospect steer at last years state fair. He had to set that one out this year due to a broken arm (from the playground, not from the cattle).

I hope your daughter gets the same enjoyment and experiences from it. Maybe we'll get to see her show at Fort Worth one of these days.

The only thing about 4H programs is that I think they have to sell the animal after they are done raising it. Its so sad.

How cool, Valis!!! Your little chickens are growing up so fast. And isn't it nice that they're getting to do all the lovely, simple, NORMAL things of childhood without any guilt feelings? Whatever we've gone through, it's nice to know we can change that for the next generation.

    Love,

    Nina

Does the fact that the first post of this thread is in quotes indicate that it's been posted elsewhere? I wonder.

ozzie, I'm not sure what the point of your post is, but yes I posted this on email's board for my friends who don't come around here very much. And no because what you first read in my post is in quotations by no means implies I posted it somewhere else on this board. I does mean and for those who know me I have a long distance relationship with my kids and their mother is good enough to email me all the time on their activities. Does that make sense? Otherwise, please let me know what you think is wrong.

cowboy...howdy hoss! Thanks for the comments. I think she will have fun with it and as loving a child as she is that piggy will be very well off till January anyway. I would imagine it will end up being bought for a breeding animal anyway.

which leads me to simplesally...I thought about this too and talking to mommy she assures me Claire is fully aware of what happens to the pig after it gets sold. That was the first thing that was talked about. Thanks for your post.

nina..I think it will teach her to respect animals and generally have a greater love of them too. AND maybe I can retire off her winnings right? *LOL*

Sheila..hey woman! I bet you would be very good with the piggies...speaking of hogs...how is Dimsdale?

yes indeed mouthy..both my girls have a great mother that has them involved in all kinds of fun stuff..For Claire currently she is doing the cheer squad for the town's high school football games. I'm getting video of this soon...and in girl scouts and we were nominated for fall festival queen for grade 1, which means she has to raise money for her school. Last time in kinderg she was nominated too and had to go to the local stores, explain what she was doing and ask all by HERSELF if she could leave a collection jar on the counter. AND T-Ball. My youngest is still too young for that, but she loves her gymnastics and cheering for her big sister, but she gets to play T-Ball next year.*LOL* although i'm sure she would rather be playing football or some other sport where she could pound little boys into the ground...*LOL*.

    Sincerely,
