the girl next door: I was not renting, owned a choice piece of America, in the line-up to vote, could a small paper like a birth certificate have stopped me from proceeding? with even Schwartzenneger, or Trump' s wife having strange place names on theirs?
Just saying voters lists is the answer, and then the credentials you mention.

If we don't require ID and proof that you can vote legally why even bother with laws about who can vote?

I think its a good system in Australia where once you are of the age (18) to vote you are required to register as a voter ,failure to do so is a fine ,and when you front up at a polling booth you identify yourself and your name is then crossed off the list as presenting yourself to vote ?
I dont see the problem with honest hearted people who see their civic duty .?

smiddy3 that is pretty much what we do in New York except there is no laws making you register at 18. Here you are free to register if you want to vote but if you don't you can't vote. Like where you live when we go to vote they look up your name in a book and sign in. We live in a small community and everyone knows who you are. Plus we have 5 poll workers and one police man watching everything. Still Totally ADD

Yes.
No provisional ballots either.
No early voting.
No mail in ballots.
If you are not vested enough to get your act together and show up to the polls you shouldn't be allowed to vote.

I think it's racist to suggest that certain groups lack the intelligence to get ID required to vote and the idea that there might by upwards of 10-30m people in a country illegally who could well be voting has to be a concern for the validity of elections - more of a concern than a few facebook ads.
We've seen what happens with ballot counts in certain counties. Allowing votes by unidentified people or multiple votes by the same people is a definite concern.

I think politicians should not be allowed to lie or mislead because then at least when voting you are deciding who to vote for on policies not false promises.

i think one vote per household is better. in the UK--the name of the person on the council tax bill.

What about people who live in houses of multiple occupancy? How would you decide which one of them got the vote?
